About the role

  • Provide leadership to the Training function.
  • Oversee and participate in order to achieve function accountabilities.
  • Receive assignment from Supervisor in broad terms on specific problems related to assigned areas of work.
  • Obtain necessary data for problem solution.
  • Develop solutions to problems, producing necessary documentation to substantiate recommendations.
  • Conduct Control Room Initial Training Program and Continuing Education (CE) Program, prepare material and deliver training to other IESO staff and external parties (e.g., Market Participants) as required/contracted.
  • Coordinate and deliver divisional training through Development and Training days.
  • Coordinate and deliver the training for IESO staff as well as Market Participants as required.
  • Provide refresher and continuing training of existing Shift Staff.
  • Create, review and maintain materials required for delivery of the above training, including training for other business units and external entities as contracted.
  • Review and provide feedback on new or revised documentation, processes and tools for Control Room use from the viewpoint of their training implications and operability.
  • Maintain training materials and records, including webpage maintenance.
  • Maintain NERC certification program, ensuring that Continuing Education Hours (CEH) Training Program is up to date and revised to meet changing NERC policies.
  • Make recommendations to line management regarding candidate readiness to sit for NERC certification exam.
  • Produce, revise and maintain Department training records, including the training library.
  • Represent the Department in NERC and internal audits.
  • Assist in developing and measuring standards of performance for individuals involved in the Shift operation.
  • Develop scenarios for, train staff in, and manage use of IESO Simulator.
  • Coordinate the use of the Simulator and Backup Control Center facility for shift staff simulator training.
  • Act as primary contact for future Simulator enhancements / architecture and perform required testing as applicable.
  • Represent the IESO on internal/external committees and working groups as required.
  • Assist Supervisor on other matters as required, including recommendations on selection and performance and providing inputs to business plan and budget.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Requires knowledge of electrical theory, power system analysis and control, mathematics, computers science and the ability to carry out highly technical engineering, economic or analytical studies related to the management and control of the bulk power system, particularly as it relates to system control operations and the requisite training functions.
  • Requires oral and written fluency in English to communicate effectively, instruct with clarity, and prepare cogent training manuals and reports.
  • Requires a series of developmental needs to meet the practical knowledge demands of the job: Completed the System Supervisor step-up qualification in the Control Room.
  • In-depth knowledge of power system operation.
  • In-depth knowledge of the EMS and PC-based tools used in power system operation.
  • Applied knowledge of the functions of electrical equipment used in transmission and generation.
  • Certification per NERC’s system operator certification program.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in training delivery, broad knowledge of the internal/external organizations served.
  • A period of over 8 years, up to and including 10 years in a Control Room environment is considered necessary to gain this experience.
