About the role

  • The Director of Finance will provide leadership for and oversight of all accounting functions for the firm, including the Accounts Payable, Budgeting, Client Funds/Trust, General Ledger Accounting, International Office Accounting, and Partner Accounting Teams.\n
  • Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Director of Finance supervises a team of professionals and collaborates closely with finance and other department peers, department heads, partners, firm leadership, and external advisors.\n
  • This position offers a hybrid schedule, allowing flexibility to work from home or the office. At present, this role requires weekly in-office presence, as well as attendance at occasional team meetings, trainings, and firm-sponsored events.\n
  • Key Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions: Budgeting & Forecasting: Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting processes, with a focus on consistency among offices/practice groups, cost containment, and in-depth variance analysis. Partner Accounting: Ensure accurate accounting for all partner accounts, including compensation and capital. Financial Reporting: Ensure accurate and timely monthly, tax year-end, and book year-end reporting. Cash Flow Management: Monitor and optimize cash flow, including projections. Develop and implement processes for investment of idle funds. Compliance & Risk Management: Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and standards, including trust accounting requirements and international accounting standards. Oversee internal controls, internal audits, risk management practices, and the external audit. Equipment Leasing: Administer the firm's IT equipment and furniture operating lease portfolio. Team Leadership & Development: Lead, mentor, and train staff. Foster a culture of high performance, accountability, and continuous learning. Advise staff on the recording of non-routine transactions (e.g., purchase accounting). Training & Education: Ensure appropriate training programs are in place for the accounting and finance staff as well as end users of the accounting and finance tools (e.g. Chrome River). Stakeholder Communication: Respond to inquiries regarding financial items. Present complex financial information in a clear, concise manner to non-financial stakeholders. Operational Efficiency: Identify and implement process improvements in systems and reporting. Evaluate and deploy technologies to streamline operations. Vendor & Banking Relationships: Manage relationships with banks, auditors, external consultants, and key vendors. In cooperation with Procurement and consultation with the CFO, negotiate optimal contract terms. Monitor service levels and address shortfalls. Mergers, Acquisitions, & Expansion: Participate in financial due diligence, modeling, and integration efforts related to mergers/combinations and office openings. Policy Development: Establish and enforce financial policies, procedures, and best practices in coordination with firm leadership. Special projects and duties as assigned.\nRequired Skills: Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.\nProven ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and adapt in a fast-paced environment.\nHigh ethical standards, integrity, and commitment to confidentiality.\nSound judgment and flexibility.\nStrong work ethic, attention to detail, and organizational skills.\nRequired Qualifications & Education: Bachelor’s degree and/or advanced degree in accounting or finance. 8-10 years of progressive experience in financial management, with at least 3 years in a leadership role – preferably in a law firm or professional services environment. Demonstrated expertise in accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and process improvement. Well-developed project management skills. Embraces innovation and automation to enhance financial processes.\nPreferred Qualifications & Education: CPA preferred. Experience with financial management software and systems commonly used in legal practice preferred.\nPhysical Requirements: Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Moderate or advanced keyboard usage.\n
