About the role

  • Own end-to-end infrastructure for voice at Hiya, including VoIP, media handling, and WebRTC technologies
  • Serve as the technical authority on call quality, making decisions about optimization, points of presence, and platform architecture
  • Build and scale solutions for MediaStream B2B UA integration to support carrier partnerships
  • Make platform-level architectural decisions as the ranking engineer in this domain, operating with significant autonomy in ambiguous territory
  • Work across mobile app and carrier contexts, ensuring our voice capabilities meet the needs of both consumer users and enterprise partners
  • Collaborate with product and engineering teams to translate technical possibilities into business opportunities

Requirements

  • Deep VoIP expertise: You've built and scaled voice infrastructure before, with hands-on experience in VoIP, WebRTC, media handling, and call quality optimization
  • Ownership mindset: You're comfortable being the ranking technical voice in your domain, making calls with incomplete information, and taking responsibility for outcomes
  • Platform thinking: You see beyond immediate problems to build systems that create leverage and unlock future opportunities
  • Comfort with ambiguity: You thrive when there isn't a clear playbook, and you know how to make pragmatic tradeoffs between speed and perfection
  • Mobile and carrier context: Experience with voice in mobile apps or carrier integrations is a strong signal of fit
  • Collaboration and communication: You can translate complex technical decisions into language that helps the business move forward, and you work well with cross-functional partners
  • PCAP analysis: You're comfortable with Wireshark and packet-level debugging for troubleshooting call quality issues.
