About the role
- Ensures the effectiveness of related sector councils and community working groups as the primary external representative and thought leader with data suppliers and data recipients, as well as industry associations.
- Represents subscribers and maintains a subscriber-focused reach while building relationships, encouraging participation, and supporting adoption compliance, protocol adoption, and strategic planning for GS1 IT systems.
- Facilitates priority planning and ensures all efforts are community-driven, and that these efforts are represented in their objectives, goals, strategies, metrics, and respective risk registers.
- Oversees community engagement and adoption of the GS1 standards framework.
- Develops and executes sector strategies aligned with GS1 Canada’s organizational strategy, drives adoption of standards-based services, and collaborates with the extended leadership team to ensure the organization’s long-term viability and success.
- Builds trusted relationships internally, externally, and globally to deliver value to subscribers, share best practices, capitalize on opportunities, and optimize strategic outcomes.
- Manages industry coordination, encourages associations and other stakeholders to identify long-term business needs, and promotes GS1 Canada’s mission.
- Establishes GS1 standards and GS1 IT system roadmaps, and defines specific objectives and timelines by understanding the sectors’ desired future state and current state, and identifying the gaps to move from current to desired future state.
- Acts as the accountable lead for community groups and working groups, leveraging deep knowledge and insights to define service requirements or enhancements, identify new opportunities, and ensure smooth adoption of GS1 Canada services by data suppliers, data recipients, and related solution providers.
- Collaborates with various departments, including standards and implementation teams, to incorporate sector perspectives and improve user experience, and supports business development and cost-recovery initiatives.
- Advocates for and develops talent, models organizational culture, builds capabilities, and manages a high-performing matrix organization that integrates an enterprise-wide vision and translates it into achievable talent objectives.
- Drives engagement, mentoring, development, performance management, and succession planning to strengthen the leadership team and ensure the organization’s long-term success.
- Supports GS1 Canada’s vision by identifying and developing strategies and budgets targeting specific sectors for subscriber retention and growth, users of GS1 standards, and users of GS1 IT systems.
- Serves as a senior advisor to co-chairs on major changes in the competitive ecosystem, the global context, and external and internal business environments.
- Assists the extended leadership team in developing and overseeing GS1 Canada’s long-term strategies, including achieving and maintaining GS1 Canada’s position as a trusted partner delivering industry value.
- Collaborates with the product management and support teams to define GS1 Canada’s product and innovation strategies and ensure industry needs are communicated and embedded into design and implementation across the industry.
- Assists the extended leadership team and the Chief Financial Officer in developing an annual operating plan that delivers the long-term strategy.
- Ensures all strategies and solutions and their implementations meet the needs of the communities represented.
- Cultivates and manages strong relationships with business partners and vendors, including the global office, member organizations, solution providers, industry leaders, associations, strategic partners, and experts.
- Works with Public Affairs to identify and promote government engagement as a regulator, advocate, or user.
Requirements
- 8–10 years of leadership experience in related industries (grocery, foodservice, etc.).
- Respected industry leader and advocate for GS1 with expertise in business process improvement.
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration (MBA an asset).
- Proven ability to build relationships at the director level and influence sector councils and industry leaders through strategic, market-informed insights.
- Advanced or specialized knowledge of GS1 products, services, and solutions and its mandate, acquired internally or through stakeholder experience in the sector.
- Ability to prioritize critical initiatives and manage complex, ambiguous situations with clear, decisive guidance.
- Entrepreneurial, adaptable, and results-oriented in dynamic, multi-project environments.
- Ability to lead high-performing bilingual teams by fostering a culture of feedback, coaching, and continuous development.
- Bilingualism in French and English is an asset for communicating with subscribers across the country in both official languages.
- Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to simplify complex information for diverse stakeholder groups.
