About the role
- Provide expert-level legal advice with a primary focus on complex commercial transactions, new business models, and operational growth initiatives.
- Work directly with senior business leaders to shape strategy and execution for this dynamic and high-visibility organization.
- Participate directly in strategy development and business planning for GM Energy, including new product launches, go-to-market strategies, and emerging business models (e.g., home energy ecosystems, grid services, public charging initiatives).
- Translate enterprise and business-unit strategies into practical legal frameworks and negotiation strategies that enable speed to market while appropriately managing risk.
- Proactively identify regulatory, commercial, and operational risks and opportunities relevant to GM Energy, and recommend pragmatic paths forward.
- Draft, interpret, and negotiate a wide range of complex commercial agreements, including collaboration and strategic alliance agreements, supply, distribution, and reseller agreements, EV charging, energy services, and grid/utility-facing arrangements.
Requirements
- Law degree (J.D. or equivalent) from an accredited college or university.
- Admitted to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- Minimum of 5 years of legal experience with a primary focus on complex commercial, technology, or M&A transactions, ideally in the energy or technology sectors.
- Demonstrated experience structuring and negotiating complex strategic relationships (e.g., collaborations, co-development or co-marketing arrangements, enterprise technology or platform deals).
- Proven ability to operate as an expert-level individual contributor: Independently manage a high-volume, high-complexity portfolio of matters with limited supervision.
- Apply strong business acumen and problem-solving skills to issues that materially impact business and functional objectives.
- Lead projects that require coordination across multiple teams and functions.
- Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to:
- Clearly and concisely explain complex legal concepts to non-lawyers.
- Prepare and present recommendations and risk assessments to senior leadership.
- Navigate disagreements and competing priorities with facts, candor, and professional judgment.
- Demonstrated ability to build trust and strong working relationships across diverse stakeholders (in-house legal colleagues, outside counsel, marketing, product, commercial, finance, and operations).
