About the role
- Act as the senior finance lead for a portfolio of not-for-profit clients, building trusted relationships with executive directors, senior leaders, and boards
- Lead board-level and executive-level financial discussions, translating complex financial information into clear, actionable insights
- Support clients with annual budgeting, multi-year forecasting, cash flow planning, and scenario analysis
- Advise on funder, grant, and restricted funding reporting requirements, including variance analysis and compliance support
- Provide strategic guidance on financial sustainability, governance, and financial risk management
- Support clients through audits and year-end processes, including liaison with external auditors and advisors
- Ensure accurate and compliant financial reporting under ASNPO
- Lead complex accounting discussions related to restricted contributions, deferred revenue, fund accounting, and multi-entity structures
- Provide expert guidance on sales tax compliance for not-for-profit organizations
- Review and oversee financial statements and reporting prepared by Controllers and accounting teams
- Champion cloud-based accounting tools, including QuickBooks Online (QBO), and related ecosystem apps
- Identify opportunities to improve reporting, automation, and financial workflows for clients
- Oversee the development of dashboards and reporting frameworks to support funders, boards, and management teams
- Mentor and develop Controllers and junior finance team members, supporting their technical and professional growth
- Review work, provide coaching, and help build strong client-facing skills across the team
- Contribute to internal training, best practices, and the continued development of Enkel’s not-for-profit CFO and controllership offerings
- Play an active role in scaling the NPO practice as we add 100 new organizations this year.
Requirements
- 15 or more years of progressive accounting and finance experience
- CPA designation or equivalent recognized accounting designation
- Deep expertise in Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations (ASNPO)
- Experience working in both public accounting and within the accounting or finance department of a not-for-profit organization
- Strong experience supporting boards, executive teams, and funders
- Proven expertise in sales tax compliance for not-for-profit organizations, including registrations, filings, and rebate recovery
- Demonstrated ability to lead budgeting, forecasting, and strategic finance initiatives
- Advanced working knowledge of QuickBooks Online (QBO) and cloud accounting ecosystems
- A passion for technology-enabled finance and modern service delivery
- Proven ability to mentor and develop junior team members
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex financial concepts clearly and confidently.
