Legal Extern

Legal Extern – Sustainable Food & Farming

• Under the supervision of a licensed attorney, the legal intern will work on case development and litigation-related projects.
• Interns might draft pleadings and briefs, conduct legal and factual research and draft memoranda, analyze case law, regulatory, and policy questions, develop strategy and legal theories, gather evidence, and attend client meetings and court proceedings.
• Applications will be reviewed beginning September 2 with an offer extended no later than September 22.

Legal Intern

• Work with attorneys on case development and litigation
• Perform legal and factual research and develop case strategy and legal theories
• Assist attorneys with preparing briefs and motions; meet with clients and experts
• Participate in moots of oral arguments and attend court proceedings and conferences
• Assist with litigation and administrative advocacy activities as necessary
• Earthjustice is a nonprofit environmental law organization that brings precedent-setting cases to protect the environment and advance environmental justice
• Legal externs are unpaid and must receive academic credit or fulfill a graduation requirement for their work

• Work with attorneys on development of legal strategies and theories, case development, and litigation.
• Work with attorneys to develop draft legislation and community engagement tools.
• Perform legal and factual research.
• Assist attorneys with preparing briefs and motions and meet with partners and expert consultants.
• Participate in moots of oral arguments and attend court proceedings.

Legal Internship - Crosscutting Toxics and Drinking Water

• Under the supervision of a licensed attorney, the legal intern will work on case development and litigation-related projects.
• Interns might draft pleadings and briefs, conduct legal and factual research and draft memoranda, analyze caselaw, regulatory, and policy questions, develop strategy and legal theories, gather evidence, and attend client meetings and court proceedings.

Legal Externship

• Under the supervision of a licensed attorney, the legal extern may: Conduct research on U.S., international, and foreign laws, policies, and case studies in the environmental and energy context. Research and develop human rights strategies. Conduct factual and/or scientific research. Assist in the preparation of memorandums or briefs, including by checking citations. Draft public communications such as press-releases or blog posts.

Legal Externship, International Program

Account Manager

• Under the supervision of an attorney, the legal extern may: Work with attorneys and other professional staff on case development and litigation
• Perform legal and factual research and develop case strategy and legal theories
• Assist attorneys with preparing briefs, motions, and comment letters
• Attend meetings with coalitions, clients, and experts
• Participate in oral argument moots and attend court proceedings and conferences with opposing counsel
• Work closely with attorneys and litigation assistants to complete cite checks as needed during periods of high workload volume

Legal Externship, Community Partnerships Program

• Under the supervision of an attorney, the legal extern will contribute legal research and writing related to new and ongoing cases for the Biodiversity Defense Program

Community Manager

• Work closely with legal and policy staff to support partnership-focused projects, helping bridge connections between teams and community partners
• Assist with planning and coordinating community and stakeholder engagement activities tied to ongoing legal and advocacy efforts
• Help track and organize national, state, and local conferences or events where Earthjustice staff can build relationships and share work
• Support the Quarterly Partnership Speaker Series, including reaching out to speakers, preparing materials, and helping ensure smooth events
• Join weekly LAP team meetings and sit in on cross-departmental calls to stay informed and help move projects forward
• Review and enhance the Earthjustice Partnership Toolkit, and help create new training materials for staff on community engagement and partnership best practices
• Assist in developing interactive learning sessions for staff focused on environmental justice, community lawyering, and collaboration strategies
• Conduct research and draft short summaries on partnership trends, advocacy strategies, or ways to strengthen relationships with community-based organizations
• Provide general support on LAP initiatives. This could include writing, preparing presentations, or helping coordinate logistics for legal and policy projects
• Assist with identifying, editing, and managing content for partnership webpage
