About the role
- Collaborate with leaders across the institution to ensure compliance and risk management related to laws, institutional policies, and administrative requirements affecting community affairs
- Review, draft, and coordinate with VP for Community Affairs, university counsel, and other colleagues on memoranda of understanding, community partnership agreements, grant agreements, and other collaboration frameworks with community organizations and local authorities
- Understand and liaise with the office of community affairs and university colleagues on legal, policy, and personnel matters and provide advisement on issues related to community engagement
- Collaborate with offices at Duke and other entities to conduct training and informational sessions for staff on principles of engagement, compliance with regulations, and ethical standards related to community affairs
- In partnership with unit leaders, develop and implement a structured process of assessing sponsorships and deploying funding for these activities
- Monitor and interpret local legislative developments affecting community engagement and provide timely updates to the VP for Community Affairs and other leaders
- Facilitate the ability of the VP for Community Affairs to manage functions by advising on key constituencies, providing context and background information on issues and coordinating research as assigned
- Staff key leadership meetings, manage workflows and project timelines to ensure initiatives, deliverables, and resources are progressing according to plan objectives and in alignment with university goals
- Prepare executive reports, briefings, and presentations as well as correspondences
- Manage special projects and support unit leaders in guiding strategic initiatives
Requirements
- Terminal degree required; Juris Doctor (JD) strongly preferred
- Experience in compliance, legal affairs, public policy, and risk management within a private, governmental or university setting
- Advanced understanding of local, state, and federal policy issues that influence partnerships and community engagements
