About the role

  • Provide legal assistance and representation to seniors, aged 60 and older, throughout Broward County regarding healthcare and public benefits related issues
  • Handle Social Security, SSI, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP) and access to healthcare cases
  • Provide legal assistance and representation regarding Medicare, Medicaid, Health Insurance Marketplace, Long-Term Care, and financial assistance programs
  • Represent clients at Agency for Healthcare Administration (AHCA) and Department of Children and Families (DCF) hearings before a Hearing Officer
  • Conduct client interviews, respond to client phone calls, conduct discovery, investigate facts, review agency notices and medical records, gather and evaluate evidence, and interview healthcare providers and witnesses
  • Represent clients in Social Security cases at hearings before Administrative Law Judge (ALJ), Appeals Council appeals, and potentially in Federal Court
  • Advise and represent clients in SNAP/TANF cases as needed
  • Perform legal research, complete forms, and draft letters, emails, memoranda, pleadings, and briefs
  • Develop case strategies, analyze probable outcomes, troubleshoot, and prioritize cases
  • Comply with program requirements including case management, time-keeping, reporting, professional development, and mandated trainings
  • Perform community outreach events and educational trainings for staff, clients, and community providers
  • Supervise paralegals, interns, and volunteers assigned to cases
  • Communicate case progress to Supervising Attorney
  • Perform other duties as requested by Management or required by grants

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
  • Florida bar membership in good standing
  • Prior healthcare or public benefit experience, particularly with Medicare/Medicaid is a plus
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in working with people with disabilities and/or lower socioeconomic status preferred
  • Capable of acting with substantial degree of independence and responsibility in a professional capacity
  • Written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to multitask, organize, detail-oriented, prioritize, and manage a diverse case load
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Professional demeanor and client-oriented focus
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and in using virtual platforms (Zoom, MS Teams)
  • Must pass a background check before employment begins
