About the role
- Develop and maintain pricing models for ground and rail services, ensuring alignment with cost drivers, market conditions, and profitability targets.
- Prepare and deliver pricing for RFQs, tenders, contract renewals, and spot rate requests across domestic and cross-border lanes.
- Conduct margin analysis by lane, customer, and product, and recommend pricing adjustments to improve competitiveness and profitability.
- Ensure pricing governance, version control, and clear documentation of assumptions and methodologies used in rate construction.
- Analyze transportation cost structures, including carrier rates, rail LineHaul, fuel, accessorial charges, terminal fees, switching charges, and surcharges.
- Monitor market trends, competitor pricing, and industry benchmarks to guide pricing decisions and support commercial strategy.
- Evaluate intermodal and rail cost variables to identify optimal routing and mode choices.
- Support development of cost-to-serve models for key customers and trade lanes.
- Work with procurement and carrier management teams to secure competitive rail and ground rates and capacity.
- Provide data-driven insights on cost, performance, and lane profitability to support carrier negotiations and sourcing decisions.
- Maintain accurate rate sheets, contracts, and pricing databases, ensuring swift access to current rates for internal stakeholders.
- Coordinate with operations and procurement to understand service performance and incorporate operational realities into pricing.
- Provide clear pricing guidance and detailed rate proposals to sales and business development teams.
- Participate in customer meetings or calls to explain pricing logic, rate structures, and value propositions where required.
- Assist in designing customer-specific pricing structures (e.g., tariffs, rate matrices, gain-share models) for strategic and key accounts.
- Support bid management teams with timely and accurate pricing inputs during tender processes.
- Track pricing performance, revenue outcomes, and profitability by lane, service, and customer segment.
- Prepare regular pricing and margin reports, dashboards, and insights for senior management and commercial teams.
- Identify trends, risks, and opportunities in pricing performance, and recommend continuous improvements to strategy and execution.
- Contribute to the development and enhancement of pricing tools, processes, and governance frameworks.
Requirements
- A diploma or degree in Logistics, Transport Management, Supply Chain, Finance, Economics, or a related field is required.
- 3–5+ years of experience in logistics pricing, transport operations, or supply chain analytics (ground or rail preferred).
- Experience with pricing in the South African ground and/or rail environment, including interaction with carriers and rail operators, is advantageous.
- Exposure to tender management, commercial support, or financial analysis will be beneficial.
- Strong analytical skills with proficiency in Excel and data modelling; experience with pricing tools or BI/reporting tools is advantageous.
- Solid understanding of ground transport, rail networks, intermodal operations, and related cost structures.
- Ability to interpret carrier contracts, rate cards, and surcharges, and translate them into customer-facing pricing.
- Good numerical and financial acumen, including margin and profitability analysis.
- Clear and professional communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain complex pricing logic simply.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail in pricing calculations, data capture, and documentation.
- Commercially aware, with a strong focus on profitability and long-term customer value.
- Highly organized, able to manage multiple RFQs, tenders, and pricing requests simultaneously and within tight deadlines.
- Proactive and solution-oriented, with the ability to challenge assumptions and propose alternative pricing or routing options.
- Collaborative team player who works effectively with sales, operations, procurement, and finance stakeholders.
- Comfortable working with high data volumes and detail while maintaining a strategic view of market and pricing dynamics.
