About the role

  • The Fleet Maintenance and Technical Services division is responsible for the following services: routine, unscheduled and emergency repairs; seasonal rebuilds; vehicle commissioning and decommissioning; vehicle inspections and certifications; warranty monitoring; shop and specialized tool maintenance and management; maintenance of small equipment and specialty equipment such as fire apparatus, ambulances, ice resurfacers, turf equipment, etc.; repair performance analysis; and technical services including specification, acquisition, leasing and disposal of municipal fleet vehicles.
  • The incumbent is responsible for implementing the acquisition plan related to the lifecycle of vehicles and equipment required by the City’s departments in support of their daily operations, including emergency services, public works, utilities, recreation and other municipal services.
  • The incumbent is also responsible for developing systems commissioning plans, providing support for asset tracking of vehicles or equipment and delivering technical expertise or services related to the City’s fleet.
  • In addition, the incumbent coordinates post-acquisition support services with equipment maintenance suppliers and parts support providers, and liaises with departmental training leads to ensure new equipment is integrated into service smoothly and without delay. The incumbent conducts technical and lifecycle investigations as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with a specialization in engineering (preferably mechanical) or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in maintaining a large fleet, including procurement and evaluation of municipal vehicles and equipment with respect to utilization and performance capabilities; analysis of vehicle or equipment cost reports and evaluation of alternative solutions; and assessment and analysis of performance, reliability and maintainability of vehicles and equipment.
  • Asset: Supervisory experience related to planning and managing fleet maintenance.
  • Professional certification in fleet management from NAFA, APWA or CILTNA is desirable.
  • Proficiency in spoken, read and written English.
  • Valid Ontario G class driver’s licence without restrictions (or an equivalent licence issued by another province) with a maximum of six demerit points.
