Butter Payments

Data Engineer

• You will work closely with Software Engineering, Machine Learning Engineers and Data Analysts
• You help ingest, organize and enable Butter to continue to deliver value on the data we collect
• We make sure it arrives in a timely manner, is organized and usable, and is of a high quality
• We ingest 3rd-party data from multiple payment providers, such as Stripe, clean it and normalize it for our schema and machine learning pipelines
• We're seeking to build transformation and validation layers as far upstream as possible to ensure a smooth flow of data through our system
• You'll get to architect our system and lay the foundation for the future from both a technology and a system design perspective
• You'll work closely with our ML and Eng team to ensure the design meets their requirements and that data properly flows through the system

Engineering Manager

• Scale the engineering team and processes to support a growing pipeline of customers, while maintaining high standards of delivery and team cohesion
• Set the engineering roadmap for your product area in coordination with Product and Engineering leadership
• Deliver high-impact features and operational improvements (performance, scalability, reliability) that directly drive Butter’s mission (recovering failed payments, reducing client churn)
• Coach, mentor and build a strong engineering team: hire, develop engineers, establish engineering practices (code review, CI/CD, metrics)
• Drive technical excellence: system design, scalable architecture, ML pipeline integration, monitoring/observability
• Collaborate with Data Science, Product, Customer Success and Sales to align engineering work with business impact and client outcomes
• Measure and report on team performance, product delivery outcomes, and key engineering metrics (velocity, defect rate, uptime, latency)
• Foster a culture aligned with Butter’s values: 'burn the boat' (take bold bets), 'survive and advance' (resilient and curious), and 'diamond hands' (master the craft)

Engineering Manager, Product Engineering

• Scale the engineering team and processes to support a growing pipeline of customers, while maintaining high standards of delivery and team cohesion.
• Set the engineering roadmap for your product area in coordination with Product and Engineering leadership.
• Deliver high-impact features and operational improvements (performance, scalability, reliability) that directly drive Butter’s mission (recovering failed payments, reducing client churn). Ability to be hands-on in development is required.
• Coach, mentor and build a strong engineering team: hire, develop engineers, establish engineering practices (code review, CI/CD, metrics).
• Drive technical excellence: system design, scalable architecture, ML pipeline integration, monitoring/observability.
• Collaborate with Data Science, Product, Customer Success and Sales to align engineering work with business impact and client outcomes.
• Measure and report on team performance, product delivery outcomes, and key engineering metrics (velocity, defect rate, uptime, latency).

• Create a system that checks the worst tendencies of data, ensuring proper flow through the system

Backend Engineer

• Build backend applications that interact with a variety of disparate APIs and data sources.
• Develop and grow client facing APIs that are flexible but standardize the data passed to them in a clean and consistent way.
• Orchestrate asynchronous workflows using technologies such as Temporal.
• Collaborate with data engineering, machine learning, and analytics teams.
• Build data models into our applications that transpose the messy data of the outside world into clean data.

Software Engineer, Backend

• Build backend applications that interact with a variety of disparate APIs and data sources.
• Develop and grow client facing APIs that are flexible but standardize the data passed to them in a clean and consistent way.
• Orchestrate asynchronous workflows using technologies such as Temporal.
• Collaborate with data engineering, machine learning, and analytics teams to ensure that the data our applications are producing scales to meet needs across the company.
• Build data models into our applications that transpose the messy data of the outside world into clean data our applications can operate on.
• Develop and operate software in production.
