About the role
- Provide effective planning and leadership to ensure efficient and productive operations within the Fleet Operations group.
- Lead teams within Fleet Operations and proactively coordinate with all ASC departments as needed to facilitate and complete all program, sustaining and project needs of the United States Antarctic Program.
- This is a working/operating foreman position with support and operating responsibilities in addition to leadership responsibilities.
- Implements and maintains a safe workplace program and ensures that safety is the highest priority.
- Reads and understands the manufacturer’s operating manual for each piece of equipment before operating as well as ensuring all team members do the same.
- Operates heavy equipment as required, including but not limited to the following activities in both dirt and snow: Road grading, ditch cleaning, trench excavation, movement, stockpiling, loading of aggregate/snow, snow plowing, snow removal, loading/unloading of trucks/trailers, material handling, disabled vehicle recovery, road construction and maintenance, airfield construction and maintenance, loading/unloading of shipping containers.
- Effectively lead teams to achieve departmental goals on a daily, weekly, seasonal, and long-term basis.
- Ensure safe and efficient use of all department equipment assets and resources.
- Work with the Fleet Operations Supervisor(s) and other Fleet Operations Foremen to establish daily, weekly, and seasonal schedules and goals that consider over-all priorities, current equipment availability, and current staffing levels and abilities.
- Ensure all team members are performing daily equipment checks.
- Conduct equipment familiarization with team members to gauge proficiency levels prior to any equipment operation.
- Provide daily written reports summarizing work completed, issues encountered, lessons learned and equipment status.
- Complete daily work requests and assignments in a safe and timely manner.
- Attend meetings as needed to gain knowledge from and ensure coordination with all other departments in support of ASC operations.
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED
- Five years of experience as a heavy equipment operator (such as those outlined above).
- At least six months of prior supervisory/leadership experience
- Class A CDL Driver’s License (Preferred)
- Rigging certifications (Preferred)
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Preferred)
- Prior cold-climate equipment operations experience (Preferred)
- Ability to thrive in an equipment and resource limited environment (Preferred)
- Basic hydraulic and mechanical understanding (Preferred)
