About the role
- responsible for the ongoing operation and maintenance of customer’s wastewater treatment systems and associated equipment.
- Providing customers with prompt, professional, high-quality service associated with customer wastewater treatment systems.
- Perform startups, periodic operations checks (onsite or remote) equipment inspections, troubleshooting, repairs, and/or preventive maintenance services on wastewater treatment systems and associated equipment/components at customer sites;
- Represent STS in professional and courteous manner following all STS and customer safety requirements.
- Install, configure, calibrate, and maintain control, measurement, and indicating instrumentation and probes (pneumatic, analog, & digital);
- Install and terminate electrical, pneumatic and fluid connections;
- Understand controls narratives and analyze / troubleshoot process application related issues.
- Perform process calculations required for the proper operation of equipment, including chemical dosage rates, biological loading, clarifier operation and sludge generation rate.
- Read/understand equipment diagrams, checklists, engineering drawings, and other process documentation to perform service tasks, assembly and repair on customer wastewater treatment systems and associated equipment and components.
- Complete job-related reports, expense reports, and forms in a timely fashion.
- Complete digital service reports to document description of work performed, materials consumed, condition or equipment as received and as returned to customer, and document cause of failure of system, equipment, or components.
- Collecting signature approval upon completion of service appointment.
- Perform repairs on wastewater treatment systems and associated equipment and components including but not limited to membrane; screening equipment; pumps; blowers; diffusers; motors; chemical feed systems; valves; piping; flow meters; monitoring probes and components; sensors, transmitters and transducers; and controls systems.
- Add process chemicals, such as potassium permanganate, hydrogen peroxide, caustic, acid, chlorine, polymer, and coagulant using mixers, pumps and metering devices.
- Clean service area of the equipment such as process floats, tanks, rotary screens, membranes, and components at customer sites.
- Identify and take corrective action on process upsets.
- Assists with mechanical preventative and corrective maintenance of process equipment, valves, and structures at treatment plants.
- Analyze and correct communication issues.
- Properly address TCP/IP networks and RS-485 communications.
- Basic knowledge of PLC and VFD programming.
- Skilled in the use of a microscope to identify micro-organisms as well as testing equipment used to perform routine mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation preventative maintenance.
- Communicate with customers to discuss job requirements, provide recommendations and service options, listen to customer concerns, and provide status updates during service call and at completion.
- Manage effective field service scheduling and reporting to assure customer requirements have been met in a timely manner and are visible and accurate in the service scheduling software.
- Assist engineering in plant design, modifications, and hazard analysis.
- Conduct customer training (as approved/assigned) on customer wastewater treatment systems and associated equipment and components when onsite.
- Observe all Federal, State and County safety rules, regulations, and procedures.
- General knowledge of the Department of Public Works' chemical hazards and safety policies and procedures.
Requirements
- Associate’s degree (2-years schooling) in Environmental, Electrical or Controls Engineering or equivalent experience with wastewater treatment plant operation and maintenance required.
- Minimum 5 years field and/or repair experience directly related to wastewater treatment and equipment.
- Must have a working knowledge of wastewater treatment systems (License to operate a Wastewater Treatment facility strongly preferred) or previous experience with an MBBR and/or MBR facility.
- Strong communication and analytical skills.
- Advanced knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment, control systems, and biological knowledge such as microbiology relevant to the wastewater operating practices, oxygen level measurement techniques, laboratory techniques, sample handling and preservation and treatment analysis in accordance with standard methods.
- Microsoft Office Suite, SAP, Salesforce.com CRM experience is preferred.
- TCP/IP networks / RS-485 communications / RS Logix 5000 experience / Allen Bradley PLC experience is preferred.
- PLC or similar Ladder-Logic programming experience a plus.
- Ability to interpret process flow, control wiring, as well as piping and instrumentation diagrams.
- Welding experience (brazing, cutting, welding, plasma) preferred.
- Maintain a California Class C Driver’s License.
