Legal Intern, Policy and Government Affairs, Immigration

General Counsel

• Reporting to the Director of the Abortion Criminal Defense Initiative, the Staff Attorney, Senior Staff Attorney, or Senior Counsel will be focused on two related goals: (1) partnering with local defense counsel to represent people facing abortion related prosecution or investigation threats; (2) identifying opportunities and assisting in implementation of affirmative advocacy and litigation strategies to reduce the harms of laws that criminalize abortion access.
• Litigate complex and sometimes fast-paced cases in federal and state courts and at trial and appellate levels, as co-counsel or legal consultant
• Provide strategic and legal support to criminal defense attorneys representing those involved in abortion care, including advising on novel questions of constitutional and statutory law
• Identify strategic opportunities for affirmative litigation and policy advocacy to reduce the harm of laws that criminalize abortion access
• Assist in design, planning, and execution of ACDI trainings and public education efforts
• Engage in public communications about abortion criminalization
• Draft and edit public education and non-litigation advocacy materials
• Support strategic collaboration and coordination across other ACLU projects, ACLU’s state affiliates, and other partners engaged in criminal defense support of those involved in abortion care.
• Assist in identifying opportunities for and advancing advocacy to limit the harm of laws that criminalize abortion and advance protections for those accessing care through strategic litigation
• Analyze legislation to assist advocacy staff including to identify legal concerns
• Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned

Staff Attorney, Senior Staff Attorney, Senior Counsel – Abortion Criminal Defense Initiative

• Lead policy and strategy development of Firewall for Freedom materials for state and municipal policy makers
• Draft and coordinate the drafting of model state or municipal legislation ahead of state legislative sessions and on an ongoing basis
• Identify needs for new or supplemental materials related to Firewall for Freedom project
• Provide supplemental policy and advocacy expertise to policy counsels on an as-needed basis
• Serve as a resource and provide guidance to affiliates on state policy and legislative efforts
• Evaluate the effectiveness of initiatives and outreach efforts to inform future strategies
• Present on the Firewall for Freedom and other state-based work to organizational partners and in coalition spaces
• Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned

State Policy Counsel, Policy & Government Affairs

• Assist with identifying opportunities to advance civil liberties and civil rights in complex policy areas through multiple methods at the federal, state, and local levels.
• Assist with developing strategic legislative and administrative policy options.
• Assist with preparing and drafting testimony on pending legislation before Congressional committees or federal regulatory agencies and other legislative or regulatory bodies at the state and local/municipal levels, as relevant.
• Assist with coordinating in-depth civil liberties briefings for government officials as pertinent to advancing priority ACLU positions.
• Help coordinate strategy designed to reach campaign goals or other policy/political outcomes across ACLU departments, ACLU affiliates, and coalition partners.

Legal Intern, Justice Policy & Government Affairs

• The creative intern will be responsible for a variety of branding and key issue projects including supporting the organization’s digital asset management, the production of printed materials for a variety of purposes as well as graphics for the ACLU web site(s), multimedia and social media channels.

Product Designer

• Contribute to the web and mobile experiences that drive audience engagement, action, and giving.
• Work with a cross-functional group of Designers, Product Managers, and Engineers to research, design, prototype, and deliver compelling digital experiences.
• Contribute to the execution, strategy, and documentation of our developing Design System for ACLU.org across platforms.
• Design and modify web features (components), from base-level elements to working prototypes.
• Write detailed technical specifications and documentation for Design System components.

• Center principles of equity, inclusion, and belonging in all work and program development.

• The ACLU seeks applicants for the full-time position of Deputy Director of National Organizing in the Organizing Division of the National Political Advocacy Department of the ACLU’s National office
• This is a hybrid role with in-office requirements of two (2) days per week or eight days per month
• The National Political Advocacy Department builds power to achieve an accountable, representative democracy
