Provide comprehensive discipline leadership and supervise the Mechanical and Piping part of the ship’s design.
Allocate design/drafting work and ensure team members work within competencies with appropriate supervision.
Provide mentorship and guidance to other designers or subcontractors in Mechanical and Piping engineering/design.
Prepare and review design and functional packages to ensure functional design requirements are met.
Produce integrated 3D models based on engineering documentation, class society rules and regulations, flag rules, company and international standards.
Develop design solutions and prepare detail design production documentation within project schedule and budget.
Develop and review design drawings for icebreaking, naval replenishment and different support or multi-purpose vessels to achieve customer approval and regulatory compliance.
Develop, review and approve material specifications and bills of material.
Ensure appropriate design methods and checks are used.
Support design standards development and improvement process.
Identify improvements in processes, tools and training to increase efficiency and quality.
Provide technical support to production and perform trade studies to determine cost-effective solutions and meet material budgets.
Support Planning, Supply Chain and Production to ensure systems are complete and functional on schedule.
Support project management with estimation of design scope, risk mitigation and enabling products to support installation and build schedule.
Progress and cost monitoring and reporting to project management and Department or Discipline Manager.
Develop and enforce design disciplines-specific standards and ensure quality of design products.
Maintain communication and collaboration with clients, contractors, and other collaborators; act as key point of contact for Detail Design Mechanical discipline.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Systems, Design or Naval Engineering is required.
5+ years of progressively senior experience in Detailed Design within shipbuilding industry, manufacturing or other heavy industries environment.
Experience working with classification society requirements.
Experience working with a diverse integrated project team, develop, supervise and lead people.
Knowledge of Marine Mechanical and Piping design, including detailed knowledge of mechanical and piping systems and production best practices.
Design knowledge and experience with ship types: icebreakers, research vessels, multi-purpose vessels, fishing vessels, naval auxiliary vessels.
Demonstrated ability of working independently to develop solutions to sophisticated technical problems.
High-level analytical skills to gather and analyze/synthesize data.
Ability to work effectively across a multi-disciplined team.
Ability to guide and mentor team members.
Strong technical writing skills.
Knowledge of Materials Requirements Planning (MRP), purchasing and management systems is preferred.
Understanding of CADMATIC and AutoCAD software, document control systems and databases.
Proficiency with AutoCAD and shipbuilding CAD systems is required.
PC proficiency and Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Teams).
Availability and willingness to travel as required by employer.
Must hold or be eligible to attain Reliability Security Clearance or higher.
