About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide legal advice, opinions, and support toward company goals
- Initiate and supervise project case management for timely and efficient completion
- Advise internal leaders on sophisticated matters affecting business activities and operations
- Identify and assess legal issues and risks; recommend and initiate appropriate action
- Interact with internal leadership on legal strategies, scenario plans, and desired outcomes
- Negotiate contract terms, settlements, mediation, and agreements
- Conduct post-closing or settlement requirements
- Retain and manage outside counsel when appropriate
- Lead department and enterprise initiatives
- Research legislative history and legal issues
- Monitor compliance with federal, state, and local laws and industry regulations
- Provide training to internal business partners on laws, regulations, procedures, risks, and regulatory changes
- Draft and negotiate contracts and legal instruments for sophisticated natural gas pipeline transactions, tariff matters, and day-to-day transactions
- Collaborate with attorneys and commercial and regulatory counterparts
- Travel up to 20%
Requirements
What you’ll need- Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school
- Minimum of ten (10) years’ relevant legal or energy experience
- Member of a State Bar Association and admitted to practice in the state hired, or eligible to become admitted within one year of hire, with current CLE compliance
- Significant experience working on Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and Natural Gas Act matters, including tariffs, rate cases, and drafting and filing pleadings with FERC
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
- Safety as the utmost priority
- Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office and PC skills
- Experience drafting agency communications, contracts, motions, briefs, pleadings, and opinions
- Experience in legal research and analysis
- Objective, detailed analytical, and problem-solving abilities
- Negotiation skills
- Knowledge of substantive law
- Willingness to travel up to 20%
