About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Lead the technical direction and delivery of client-facing and internal portals
Set standards for quality, performance, responsiveness, accessibility and security across devices and browsers
Own front-end standards and styling governance across the portal estate
Ensure consistent design, UX and alignment with corporate brand identity
Own and safely evolve the current portal estate, including heritage applications
Lead rationalisation toward unified, single-portal architectures and modernise legacy portals where needed
Provide day-to-day technical leadership to the in-house web development team
Lead blended delivery with delivery partners and augmented capacity
Define and evolve web engineering standards, tooling and ways of working
Drive code review, version control, automated testing and CI/CD practices
Ensure web delivery aligns with information security, control and regulatory standards
Evaluate and introduce technologies, tools and practices that improve quality, consistency or delivery pace
Embed AI-first and automation-first practices into web engineering
Drive use of vibe-coding and AI prototyping tools such as Lovable
Ensure validated prototypes integrate cleanly into the portal estate
Contribute to citizen development and self-service app-building discussions
Build relationships across architecture, engineering, assurance, design, delivery, marketing and brand teams
Foster continuous improvement, knowledge sharing and cross-training

Requirements

What you’ll need

Deep, hands-on expertise in modern web and front-end engineering
Strong command of Next.js, React, TypeScript and Tailwind CSS
Familiarity with Expo or experience building cross-platform React applications is an advantage
Solid understanding of accessibility standards such as WCAG
Fluency in version control, CI/CD, automated testing and disciplined code review
Ability to build responsive interfaces across devices and browsers
Experience using vibe-coding and AI prototyping tools such as Lovable
Ability to translate business and user needs into technical solutions
Sound judgement on front-end security and experience in regulated or control-heavy environments
Credibility to lead technical decisions and set standards through hands-on craft
Clear communication across technical and non-technical audiences
Collaborative, pragmatic and outcomes-focused approach
Proven track record leading web or front-end teams and setting technical standards
Demonstrable experience consolidating or rationalising a portal or web application estate
Experience modernising heritage applications toward current standards
