About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Own the software build lifecycle from qualified, defined initiatives through development and testing to an assured, production-ready package
- Own engineering capacity, sequencing and throughput to deliver the committed roadmap
- Provide technical leadership and delivery capacity to delivery leads and project managers
- Support the enterprise change portfolio with appropriate engineering resources
- Manage the business-as-usual demand channel across small change, defects and maintenance
- Deliver controlled small change requests below the enterprise change threshold
- Own defect intake and triage, validating defects and routing new requirements appropriately
- Own maintenance workload, including framework deprecation and package vulnerability responses
- Apply architecture solution archetypes and patterns in build and feed build experience back into architecture
- Define, create and enforce coding standards, engineering practices and ways of working
- Drive common patterns, processes and naming conventions across product lines
- Ensure work is traceable to agreed architecture and decision artefacts
- Own engineering quality end to end, including reviews, test strategy, quality gates and assurance
- Maintain evidence and attestation required in a regulated environment
- Realise solutions on agreed platforms and technologies through the Technology Reference Architecture
- Own and continuously improve the engineering toolchain, including source control, CI, package management, code quality and scanning
- Partner with the platform team to ensure clean handover of production-ready packages
- Contribute to environment strategy while recognising platform ownership of infrastructure
- Manage delivery-partner and build-capacity vendors
- Embed AI-first and automation-first ways of working
- Ensure engineers have appropriate tools, training and opportunities
- Promote knowledge sharing, cross-training and adaptable team structures
- Build relationships across architecture, engineering, assurance, design, platform and delivery
Requirements
What you’ll need- Deep technical credibility across modern software engineering and delivery practice
- Strong grasp of engineering standards, patterns and ways of working
- Ability to apply architecture archetypes in build
- Fluency in version control, CI/CD, automated testing, quality gates and disciplined code review
- Working understanding of AI-first and automation-first engineering
- Ability to provide technical leadership and translate outcome intent into deliverable engineering work
- Sound judgement in regulated or control-heavy environments, including evidence and attestation
- Analytical, data-driven approach to throughput, quality and performance management
- Clear communication across technical and non-technical audiences
- Proven track record leading software engineering teams and delivering production software predictably
- Experience running an engineering function serving project-driven change and business-as-usual work
- Experience defining and enforcing engineering standards and raising quality
- Experience managing delivery-partner or build-capacity vendors
- Experience operating within an architecture-governed environment and realising solutions against a reference architecture
- Experience introducing modern engineering practices, ideally including AI-assisted engineering
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, IT, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience
