About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Assure quality service in a safe, non-judgmental, compassionate, and professional manner
  • Perform daily work requirements to achieve department objectives
  • Explain program rules and regulations to residents and facilitate observance
  • Coordinate meal preparation/service, bed/sleeping assignments, showers, laundering, and other daily routines
  • Provide awake shift coverage and maintain grounds security
  • Conduct hourly safety and security checks
  • De-escalate crises and provide emergency assistance to clients and co-workers
  • Maintain daily reports and statistical information
  • Perform housekeeping and maintenance tasks as needed
  • Prepare rooms for next residents and maintain staff-area cleanliness
  • Respond to client questions and concerns
  • Perform clerical duties, including answering telephones, recording messages, and filing
  • Maintain routine communication with residents
  • Assist with client development and implementation of plans supporting program completion and self-sufficiency
  • Document and report client concerns and infractions affecting program security
  • Complete shift logs, observation logs, and incident reports
  • Monitor and restock program equipment and supplies
  • Secure approval for policy exceptions
  • Notify management of workflow problems and resource needs
  • Adhere to staffing schedules
  • Communicate with on-site staff, Program Manager, service providers, and external county/state/city representatives
  • Direct available resources as required
  • Adhere to ethical standards, program philosophy, and confidentiality laws
  • Assist with orientation, training, and development of new staff
  • Identify ongoing training needs and report them to management
  • Support program development and quality operations
  • Maintain knowledge of fire, safety, and health standards
  • Continually develop technical and interpersonal skills
  • Attend staff meetings and assigned training seminars
  • Complete required certifications

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and comprehend oral and written instructions
  • Ability to provide services to clients without ethnic or social prejudices
  • General knowledge of issues and challenges unique to homelessness, substance abuse, young adults, minorities, and persons with disabilities
  • Ability to utilize a range of interventions to work with clients with varying needs and levels of functioning
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours
  • Willingness to function as a team member
  • Basic computer skills
  • CPR and First Aid training within ninety (90) days of employment, re-certification as necessary
  • Annual T.B. testing
  • Valid California driver’s license required to operate any VOA vehicle
  • Teamwork skills
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to de-escalate crises and assist residents and staff in emergencies
  • Organizational skills
  • Analytical and decision-making ability
  • Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds
  • Physically able to safely maneuver the weight distribution of a client in an emergency
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and sit frequently
  • Ability to kneel occasionally
  • Ability to climb stairs where programs have more than one level
  • Ability to maneuver quickly in emergencies to assist clients as needed
