About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Integrate technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet patient and family needs
  • Assist the healthcare team with illness and injury prevention, wellness maintenance, and provision of comfort
  • Provide direction and education and develop or assume unit-level leadership responsibilities, depending on clinical level
  • Deliver and accurately document direct, age-specific patient care based on medical orders and an integrated multidisciplinary plan
  • Safely administer prescribed medications and identify incompatibilities and/or interactions
  • Recognize or anticipate changes in patient situations and intervene appropriately
  • Mobilize resources to meet individualized patient and family needs
  • Serve as a role model in a clinical setting at the Clinical Nurse III level
  • Follow physician or licensed independent provider orders and nursing regulations in the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Follow the ANA Code of Ethics, national nursing practice standards, and VCUHS policies and procedures
  • Organize work, delegate, and supervise RNs, LPNs, care partners, unit secretaries, and others

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligibility for Virginia licensure or a compact state license
  • Current RN licensure in Virginia for continued employment
  • AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent
  • Clinical Nurse I: no experience required
  • Clinical Nurse II: 12 to 24 months RN experience
  • Clinical Nurse III: 3 years of clinical experience
  • Diploma or Associate's Degree from a professional nursing program recognized and/or approved by the corresponding state’s Board of Nursing
  • Registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing or higher must enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of starting and complete it within five years, unless grandfathered under previous requirements
  • Clinicians work all three shifts, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to lift 20–50 lbs.
  • Ability to work with potentially hazardous and infectious substances
  • Prolonged standing and sitting; frequent bending; walking distances; climbing; reaching overhead, extensively, and repetitively
  • Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, clear speech, legible writing, reading, and logical thinking
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, noisy environment, handle multiple priorities, and manage frequent and intense customer interactions
