About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Perform assessments and therapeutic interventions for routine hospital-based pediatric patients
- Perform department and team tasks, problem solving, and intervention activities
- Orient allied health professionals after successful completion of the CFY year, with Department Manager approval
- Provide student experiences with Coordinator of Student Supervision approval
- Schedule therapy frequency and intensity
- Select and administer assessment instruments and interpret results
- Complete documentation
- Plan and carry out treatment strategies
- Develop long- and short-term goals
- Provide patient, family, and staff education
- Report at patient, family, and team conferences
- Terminate therapy when appropriate
- Receive clinical and professional guidance from Supervisor or SLP II or higher
- Work schedules, including weekends and holidays, according to unit organizational and staffing needs
Requirements
What you’ll need- License or licensure eligibility from the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Speech and Language Pathologist
- Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in SLP from ASHA or Clinical Fellowship Year candidate
- Current Virginia SLP license required for continued employment
- Current CCC in SLP; CFY incumbents must complete CFY and receive CCC by the conclusion of the first year of employment
- CPR certification
- New graduate/CFY candidates to SLPs with less than two years of experience
- Previous clinical experience evaluating and treating neurogenic, motor speech, linguistic/cognitive communication, and swallowing disorders
- Previous experience performing swallow studies, including MBS and bedside assessments
- Previous experience planning and executing treatment
- Master's Degree from an ASHA-accredited program in Speech and Language Pathology
- Required learning exchange courses
- Ability to meet physical requirements including lifting 20–50 lbs, prolonged standing and sitting, walking, climbing, and repetitive motion
- Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, clear speech, legible writing, reading, and logical thinking
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, noisy environment, handle multiple priorities and frequent/intense customer interactions, and adapt to frequent change
