About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Co-lead an autonomous engineering squad alongside a Product Manager
- Create clarity, consistency and momentum within the squad
- Raise the team’s voice to senior leadership
- Act as a bridge between the squad and business stakeholders
- Take responsibility for technical decisions and alignment with company and technical strategy
- Identify and improve engineering practices
- Define team goals and drive prioritisation
- Establish practices to meet security and operational SLOs
- Coordinate organisation-wide on-call coverage
- Lead regular metrics reviews for coverage and performance
- Set OKRs with the Product Manager and team
- Identify and mitigate risks and blockers
- Measure and improve team performance and delivery predictability
- Communicate progress against OKRs, KPIs and milestones
- Co-lead annual and quarterly squad planning
- Staff the squad with required technical skills and hire as needed
- Onboard, train, develop and coach direct reports
- Participate in performance calibration and promotion reviews
- Communicate company, department and pillar strategy to the squad
- Provide business insight and context to stakeholders
- Foster a healthy team culture and resolve interpersonal conflicts
- Communicate organisational changes to the squad
- Collaborate with UX, Data and other cross-functional colleagues
- Ensure team OpEx and CapEx expenditures align with budgets
Requirements
What you’ll need- Knowledge of core technology stack: gRPC, GraphQL, React, Kafka, Docker and Kubernetes
- Experience with Go preferred but not essential
- Experience leading technical design processes and facilitating design discussions
- Ability to represent the team in cross-functional technical conversations
- Ability to drive technical decisions to clear, documented outcomes
- Experience validating designs and architecture against real-world edge cases and domain variations
- Ability to own technical decisions aligned with product and engineering strategy
- Strong understanding of engineering best practices
- Hands-on experience with AI development tools
- Experience defining team goals and driving prioritisation
- Experience working with Product Managers to set OKRs aligned with company goals
- Ability to co-lead annual and quarterly planning
- Experience identifying and mitigating risks early
- Experience improving delivery predictability
- Experience identifying security and SLO practices
- Ability to drive operational excellence and lead metrics reviews
- Experience managing a team of engineers
- Proven ability to onboard, train, develop and coach reports

- Intermediate awareness of customer and market insights
- Ability to communicate strategy to the squad
- Experience building deep domain knowledge beyond the happy path
- Ability to identify ambiguity or incompleteness in requirements and designs
- Experience with complex, multi-variant domains such as billing, pricing, identity or claims
- Experience fostering healthy team dynamics and resolving interpersonal conflicts
- Ability to collaborate with cross-functional colleagues
