About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Manage moderately complex litigation arising out of auto or property contracts in compliance with state laws and regulations
- Create defense or settlement strategies
- Evaluate, negotiate, and collaborate with defense counsel to secure appropriate resolutions
- Deliver concierge-level member service through appropriate expectations, proactive communications, advice, and empathy
- Manage litigation involving serious injury or property damage, questionable damages, liability, or coverage issues
- Act as liaison with members, internal counsel, external counsel, and management
- Document litigation strategy, budgets, investigations, evaluations, negotiations, settlements, and trial decisions
- Represent USAA at mediations, case conferences, and/or trials
- Review, audit, and approve legal fees and expenses
- Partner with or direct law firm vendors to facilitate timely lawsuit resolution
- Hold law firm vendors accountable for Defense Counsel Litigation Handling Requirements
- Resolve routine and intermediate issues in legal case management
- Identify opportunities to improve practices and processes
- Advise membership, attorneys, and management on moderately complex litigation
- Ensure high levels of service from employees and law firm vendors
- Act as an informal resource for team members
- Identify, measure, monitor, and control risks in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree; OR 4 years of related experience may be substituted in lieu of degree
- 4 years work experience handling liability and first party claims or progressive experience in litigation
- 2 years customer contact experience
- Claims adjusters license in assigned state or ability to obtain license within 3 months
- Demonstrated negotiation and customer service skills
- Excellent communication skills with experience as an effective liaison between partners, members, outside counsel and management
- Knowledge of P&C policies state laws
- Knowledge of regulatory compliance related to claims and claims litigation
- Experience handling large losses auto, property or commercial
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office tools to include Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- 5+ years' experience handling casualty liability claims to include bodily injury and uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury claims
- 2+ years' direct handling of Auto Bodily Injury and Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Litigation to resolution
- Familiarity with injury claims litigation processes
- Experience working injury claims in California, Washington, Nevada and Arizona
- Continuing Education to include any relevant insurance designations (SCLA, CPCU, AIC, etc.)
