About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Review documentation for required elements, including attestations, signatures, dates, and other medical-record requirements
- Abstract and code surgical procedures across all CPT sections and crosswalk surgical codes to ASA codes
- Code complex anesthesia cases and apply appropriate modifiers
- Code ICD10
- Abstract anesthesia times and events
- Identify care-team providers and review medical direction
- Meet team KPIs, including daily production and quarterly coding-audit score requirements
- Work cases escalated by coding staff and provide feedback
- Provide management reports as requested
- Work complex edits and denials, including concurrency and provider-time conflicts
- Identify and report trends
- Adhere to company policies and procedures, especially HIPAA and confidentiality
- Mentor less experienced coders and assist with training
- Address escalated coding cases and interact with clinicians regarding documentation deficiencies
- Collaborate with Quality and Education, RCM, and vendor coding teams
Requirements
What you’ll need- High school graduate or equivalent
- 5+ years of complex surgical coding across all specialties
- 4+ years of anesthesia coding
- 5+ years of experience in anesthesia
- Current CPC required
- CANPC is a plus
- Experience with complex coding for cardiac, critical care, transplant, and interventional radiology
- Experience coding for physicians, CRNAs, CAAs, NPs, SRNAs, and residents
- Proficiency in surgical CPT, ICD10, ASA codes, coding guidelines, NCCI bundling, LCD/NCD, and CMS guidelines
- Proficiency coding all anesthesia elements, including time, medical direction, and care-team nuances
- Experience with multiple EMRs and documentation types, including handwritten and electronic records
- Working knowledge of MD Cloud Practice Solutions, Medaxion, PC7, and facility EMRs
- Working knowledge of Athena IDX for edits, denials, manual tasks, and charge corrections
- Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe PDF
- Intermediate Outlook skills
- Ten-key proficiency
- Ability to read, write, and speak English
- Excellent computer, organizational, and time-management skills
- Ability to work independently and self-motivate new projects
- Must reside outside California, Hawaii, and Alaska
