About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Process cash receipts and disbursements, including incoming wires to the Foundation bank account, and help route related customer service inquiries.
- Support tracking and reconciliation of gifts, endowments, and pledges in partnership with the Foundation team.
- Perform bank reconciliations and maintain supporting documentation.
- Prepare journal entries and reconcile supporting schedules to the general ledger.
- Assist in preparing Foundation financial statements and management reports.
- Support annual audit preparation, including assembling audit schedules and responding to auditor inquiries.
- Assist with preparation of IRS Form 990 and related compliance requirements.
- Assist with select Urban Land Institute journal entries and finance tasks as directed.
- Support other accounting activities as assigned by the Senior Director, International Operations and Foundation Accounting.
- Bring forward ideas for improving or streamlining existing Foundation accounting processes rather than simply maintaining the status quo.
Requirements
What you’ll need- Approximately 2-3 years of general accounting experience
- Working knowledge of basic accounting principles (US GAAP)
- Strong customer service and communication skills
- A proactive, adaptable, and analytical approach, comfortable asking questions and raising issues early when something is unclear
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and general accounting software
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, or equivalent experience.
- Nonprofit or foundation accounting experience is a plus but not required.
- Experience with Intacct or a comparable accounting system.
- Exposure to donor, gift, or membership database systems is a plus but not required.
- Prior experience supporting an annual audit process.
