About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Provide asynchronous essay reviews aligned with Upswing's tutoring philosophy to help students become better writers
- Meet synchronously with students via the virtual classroom
- Provide thorough, insightful, actionable written feedback on student essays and writing assignments
- Use the Socratic method, prioritizing inquiry and higher-order concerns
- Support college students developing critical thinking skills
- Review diverse writing, including health sciences, argumentative essays, history, and work addressing controversial subjects such as politics and religion
- Remain active during fall and spring semesters
- Complete onboarding within approximately 2–5 business days after hiring
- Potentially complete subject matter evaluations before acceptance as an academic coach
Requirements
What you’ll need- Graduate with a degree in English/writing, or writing professional
- 1+ year of college/university Writing Center tutoring and training experience
- Writing Center experience highly preferred
- Familiarity with tutoring methodology and the Socratic method
- 3.5 GPA or higher
- Transcript demonstrating success in a writing-intensive program; unofficial transcript required with application
- Fast and reliable Internet
- Access to MS Word or Google Docs
- Laptop or desktop computer
- Commitment to 15–25 hours per week during surge periods, approximately February 1–May 15
- Comfortable reviewing diverse writing, including health sciences, argumentative essays, history, and controversial topics
- Ability to receive biweekly payments via PayPal
- Stable internet and a quiet location for virtual work
- May need to complete subject matter evaluations before acceptance as an academic coach
