About the role

  • **PURPOSE OF POSITION:**
  • Under the general supervision of the Director of Financial Reporting and Comptroller, the Senior Accountant provides basic accounting support for fundamental business operations of the University System of Maryland Office (USMO) and assists in the accumulation and compilation of financial information of the various Institutions comprising the University System of Maryland (USM), in accordance with identified external and internal constraints and guidance.
  • **RESPONSIBILITIES:**
  • **General Accounting Processes:**
  • - Performs various accounting processes, including but not limited to:
  • - Accounts payable processing and monitoring
  • - Working fund reconciliations
  • - Invoice preparation
  • - Interinstitutional transactions
  • - Following up on collections
  • - Provides accounting for the USMO’s fixed asset inventory, ensuring full compliance with the USMO Policy on Equipment Control.
  • - Prepares the semi-annual schedule of changes in fixed assets, which supports the development of the USM’s interim and annual audited financial statements.
  • **Financial Statements:**
  • - Provides accounting assistance and support in the periodic preparation of the SystemOffice and USM financial statements and other periodic and ad-hoc financial reporting needs.
  • **Endowment Funds:**
  • - Provides accounting and other administrative support associated with the USM’s endowment funds, known as the Common Trust Fund.
  • **Maryland Education Enterprise Consortium (MEEC) Accounting:**
  • - Maintains accounting records.
  • - Prepares periodic financial statements.
  • - Reconciles dues, surcharge fees outstanding, and credit card payments.
  • - Responds to other ad hoc requests as required.

Requirements

  • **MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:**
  • **Required Education Level/Certifications: **
  • Accounting degree; CPA, or eligible to sit for CPA exam.
  • **Required Experience: **
  • 2 years of work experience in accounting or audit. Must have financial reporting experience either with a public accounting firm or in a corporate environment.
  • **Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: **
  • Good written and oral communication skills. Proficiency in the use of personal computers and experience with Microsoft Office, including intermediate to advanced Excel skills.
  • **PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:**
  • **Preferred Experience:**
  • 2 or more years of work experience in public accounting and/or financial reporting.
