About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Distribute and monitor work for an assigned group of Financial Counselors
- Prioritize work in a high-volume, fast-paced, team-oriented environment
- Interview, screen, and assess patients, community applicants, and family members for healthcare coverage eligibility
- Determine eligibility for affordable health insurance, APTC, premium assistance, Medicare Savings Plans, and other programs
- Facilitate enrollment through the Health Connector Health Insurance Exchange and other program applications
- Follow up with patients by phone or in person to complete applications and obtain confidential financial and medical information
- Liaise with MassHealth, the Health Connector, and the Health Safety Net to resolve eligibility discrepancies and application status issues
- Explain health access options, eligibility rules, coverage types, enrollment periods, and available plans
- Cover the Financial Counseling call center and support patients, families, community members, clinical departments, and Revenue Cycle departments
- Provide and document patient price estimates in accordance with federal price transparency regulations
- Use EPIC work queues to identify and contact uninsured or underinsured patients and screen them for assistance programs
- Collaborate with clinical teams, interpreters, social workers, case managers, outreach workers, coordinators, provider offices, and community health centers
- Discuss financial obligations before elective surgery or admissions and communicate information to provider offices and Revenue Cycle departments
- Update patient accounts with financial class, eligibility dates, and financial and demographic information
- Train and provide technical assistance, direction, and leadership to assigned employees and support the supervisor in resource utilization
Requirements
What you’ll need- Associate’s degree in Business or Social Services, or three years’ experience in healthcare, accounts receivable, or a related function
- Certified Application Counselor (CAC) certification
- Annual recertification and mandatory ongoing training through the Massachusetts online Learning Management System
- Compliance with privacy and security regulations meeting federal program standards
- Three years’ experience in healthcare, accounts receivable, Financial Counseling, medical billing, or a related field
- Proficiency in department collection practices and third-party, bad-debt, and free-care regulations
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Effective communication and customer service skills
- Ability to use specialized applications software and computer systems for patient registration and scheduling
- Ability to work independently and resolve problems effectively
- English speaking, reading, and writing skills
- Ability to cover other campuses if warranted
- Must provide own transportation
