About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Responsible for day-to-day supervision of staff, laboratory testing and workflow in the laboratory section as assigned.
  • Ensures laboratory results are produced in accordance with established laboratory procedures.
  • Coordinates communication of technical and result issues to lab management and operations leadership.
  • Provides advanced technical support for staff and is an active participant in quality assurance management in the laboratory.
  • Major Responsibilities: Oversight of laboratory staff: makes recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions.
  • Resolves grievances and other personnel problems within position responsibilities.
  • Completes documentation of competency: signs off on new employee’s probationary period and annual staff competencies, as required by CAP.
  • Coordinates scheduling, staffing, and emergent coverage needs for all campus laboratory locations.
  • Make recommendations for capital purchases, staff and/or process changes to be included in the budget consideration process.
  • Writes, edits, and organizes new and existing procedures.
  • Takes an active role in the procedure review process to ensure they remain consistent with laboratory practices.
  • Ensures compliance with all laboratory quality and safety policies.
  • Ensures all periodic instrument maintenance is performed.
  • Provides guidance and appropriate follow-through to other staff members for complex or unusual test results.
  • Ensures expected courier operations are met, including communication related to courier route optimization, specimen transport requirements, chain of custody, service level requirements.
  • Oversees core lab temperature monitoring system, including environmental compliance programs and documentation are met daily including corrective actions and adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Leads and ensures supplies are received, inspected, documented, and distributed to areas for quality control and proper receipt in timely manner.
  • May assist with laboratory inventory management, including supply utilization analysis, par level, stock rotation, ordering, and other duties as required.

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor’s degree of science from an accredited college/university with a major in Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology, or Biological Science or chemistry, or Bachelor’s degree with Major with a combination of 30 semester hours in biology and chemistry and math, or Official evaluation report for non-US college/university transcript.
  • National certification as a generalist Medical Laboratory Technologist/Scientist, categorical in the specialty of the operation, or Specialist: Examples: ASCP Technologist/Scientist Certification: Blood Bank (BB), Chemistry (C), Cytogenetics (CG), Cytologist (CT), Hematology (H), Histotechnologist (HLT), Microbiology (M), Molecular Biology (MB), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS).
  • ASCP Specialist Certification: Blood Bank (SBB), Chemistry (SC), Cytology (SCT), Cytometry (SCYM), Hematology (SH), Microbiology (SM), Molecular Biology (SMB).
  • ASCP Technician: Phlebotomy Technician (PBT), Histotechnician (HT) ABHI Specialist Certification: CHT (ABHI) or CHS(ABHI).
  • Must qualify as high complexity testing personnel under CLIA regulations where required.
  • 5 years clinical or anatomic laboratory experience.
  • 1 year of experience in a clinical or anatomic leadership role.
  • Knowledge of evaluation methodologies, data analysis, i.e., statistics, QC/proficiency testing, and analytic root cause analysis.
  • Must possess the interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written) needed to provide effective participative leadership and for successful communication with all levels of staff.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft products.
