About the role

  • Provide all aspects of respiratory therapy in accordance with Respiratory Care Department policies and procedures
  • Work with considerable independence to perform routine and complex patient care in all assigned areas
  • Review patients' electronic medical record for history, reason for admission, pertinent laboratory/radiological data, and current orders
  • Administer aerosolized medications
  • Draw and analyze Arterial Blood Gases and report critical values per hospital policy
  • Consult with physician staff and make recommendations regarding therapy type, method, duration, and medication dosages
  • Monitor patients' physiological responses to therapy and consult with physicians if adverse reactions occur
  • Provide emergency care including assisting with intubation, Rapid Response Team, High Risk Delivery and Code Team
  • Inspect, test, clean, and maintain respiratory therapy equipment per department policy
  • Demonstrate and instruct respiratory care procedures to staff, patients, and families; provide supervision for students and agency/per-diem personnel
  • Set up and operate devices including oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilators, CPAP/Bi-level support, NIPPV, high flow oxygen therapy, and body plethysmograph
  • Maintain patient and department records in the electronic medical record and medical administration record
  • Participate in departmental quality assurance programs and maintain up-to-date knowledge through educational meetings and conferences
  • Provide verbal reports including diagnosis, history, treatment goals, patient response, and suggestions to optimize treatment plan
  • Comply with departmental policies, health and safety regulations, attend meetings, and perform other similar duties as required

Requirements

  • Associate of Science in Respiratory Care
  • Current Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential issued by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)
  • Current Massachusetts State Respiratory Care License
  • Basic Life Support Certification
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (required within 3 months of employment)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (required within 3 months of employment)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (required within 3 months of employment)
  • Valid and unrestricted driver’s license recognized by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and access to a reliable, insured vehicle
  • Minimum two (2) years of acute care experience (preferred five (5) years)
  • Ability to assess patients and make appropriate therapeutic recommendations along the continuum of care from admission to discharge including all aspects of respiratory care from floor therapies to mechanical ventilation and blood gas interpretation
  • Ability to read, write and speak clearly in English
  • Preferred: Bachelor of Science or higher; Specialty credential issued by the NBRC (ACCS, SDS, NPS, or RPFT); AE-C Certification
  • Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted
