About the role
- Prepare technical documents and design and develop product data to their functional domain level with no supervision
- Technically lead the design intent, delivering design solutions to meet project schedule & budget requirements
- Apply and scrutinise requirements of a project with no supervision and capture/derive new requirements related to own domain
- Technically interface with operations and supply chain ensuring the design intent is met and requirements achieved; apply and develop DFM/DFT practices
- Lead preparation and/or review of engineering estimates & bids, identifying risks and dependencies
- Present ideas and proposals internally and at external design reviews
- Liaise with support functions (Commercial, Finance, Supply chain) and uphold company security, commercial licensing for export and ITAR requirements
- Lead failure investigations, recommend solutions, and report findings to management and customers
- Lead resolution of technical challenges and large/complex technical work packages, guiding other engineers to meet schedule, budget and quality
- Author complex assemblies, drawings & models, apply linear and geometric tolerances and uphold company drawing and modelling standards
- Influence PCB layouts for mechanical survival during test and support electronics and systems activities
- Perform FEA analysis and reporting; apply basic CFD understanding where required
- Coach and train more junior staff and author updates to the Draughting Standard Manual
- Manage technical risk, communicate succinctly on technical issues, and proactively manage own work and the work of others
Requirements
- Relevant qualifications to an appropriate level, typically a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
- Preferably a Chartered engineer or equivalent with a recognised professional engineering institution
- Significant post-qualification experience in a range of roles within a relevant complex engineering environment
- Experience with mechanical aspects of PCB & Enclosure design
- Focus on designing for EMI & EMC
- Familiarity with aerospace materials & manufacturing methods
- Understanding of airworthiness and safety for certification
- Understanding of DO-160 and other environmental requirements
- Expert at authoring complex assemblies and drawings & models using at least two company CAD tools
- Expert at electrical wiring assemblies to British and International Standards
- Competent at FEA analysis and reporting; basic understanding of CFD
- Robust knowledge of project and engineering lifecycles using APQP/PPAP methodologies in line with AS9145
- Expert at designing for manufacture and production processes (DFM/DFT)
- Awareness of PLM tools; expert at Configuration and Change management
- Good application of Microsoft packages and relevant software for the role
- Able to undertake some offsite travel
- Candidates must be able to work in the UK without restrictions
- Prepared to successfully undertake UK National Security Vetting according to UK Government criteria
