Commercial Insurance Underwriter – Midshift

About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Join a growing and innovative insurance provider as an Underwriter
- Assessing risk, managing referrals, and supporting a profitable portfolio
- Work across commercial and specialty insurance products in a collaborative, fast-paced environment
- Partner with cross-functional teams and contribute to underwriting strategy
- Help deliver sound, data-driven decisions while ensuring strong customer outcomes
- Prioritise and process underwriting referrals in line with service level agreements
- Review proposal forms, financials, risk surveys, claims histories, and supporting documentation to assess exposure
- Evaluate claims activity and determine its impact on renewal terms, pricing, risk appetite, and coverage suitability
- Assess risks outside standard underwriting criteria, determining appropriate terms, conditions, or pricing
- Ensure all decisions align with underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements, and internal policies
- Support sales and customer service teams in clearly explaining underwriting decisions to brokers and customers
- Collaborate with underwriting, claims, operations, and customer service teams to ensure consistent and effective outcomes
- Provide administrative and analytical support to the broader underwriting team
- Identify opportunities to refine product wording, underwriting criteria, and processes
- Maintain accurate and detailed underwriting records, including case notes and decision rationale
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal standards
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Insurance, Risk Management, Commerce, or related field (preferred)
- Minimum 3 years’ hands-on commercial underwriting experience, including managing referrals and risk assessments
- Experience in pet insurance is beneficial but not essential
- Strong understanding of underwriting principles, including risk assessment, pricing, policy terms, endorsements, and exclusions
- Ability to analyse financial and risk data and identify key exposures
- High attention to detail and accuracy in reviewing documentation
- Effective time management with the ability to handle multiple cases and deadlines
- Clear communication skills, with the ability to explain underwriting decisions professionally
- Proficient in underwriting systems, Microsoft Office, and able to quickly learn new tools
- Commercially aware, proactive, and a collaborative team player
- Willing to work on Mid-shift
