About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Assist TU program and project managers with planning and managing engineering work completed by outside consultants, including crafting scopes, budgets, and schedules, reviewing project designs/deliverables, and providing construction oversight.
- Collaborate with existing engineers and national restoration center staff to build a sustainable internal engineering services division within the organization that integrates with existing TU program and project managers.
- Conduct stream geomorphic surveys, stream habitat assessments, aquatic passage assessments, and topographic surveys using total station and/or GPS equipment.
- Complete analytical assessments of aquatic habitats, and design calculations and modeling of proposed project conditions using a variety of tools and software according to project need, such as Civil 3D, ArcGIS, HEC-RAS, Rivermorph, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Prepare construction-level designs for stream restoration and conservation projects, including cost estimates, specifications, and drawing sets in Civil 3D.
- Stamp, and serve as the Engineer of Record for project designs as appropriate.
- Work with TU internal and external partners to plan and complete permitting, construction oversight, and monitoring activities.
- Travel to local and regional project sites for survey, construction, and meetings as required.
- Work collaboratively with other TU staff (program and project managers, design team, etc.), landowners, funders, contractors, and other project partners.
- This position is a non-supervisory position and this is not an all-inclusive list of duties and responsibilities.
Requirements
What you’ll need- Professional Engineering (PE) licensure, or ability to promptly gain licensure, in Colorado and other nearby states as deemed appropriate over time.
- Advanced education and continuing professional development in hydraulic engineering, civil engineering, environmental engineering or biological systems engineering with at least 10 years of relevant experience.
- M.S. preferred, B.S. required.
- Extensive experience with road and culvert replacement construction standards and specifications, including stream simulation methodology for aquatic organism passage and hydrology and hydraulic analysis and modeling.
- Advanced knowledge of sediment transport principles and general landform processes related to riverine systems.
- Expertise and experience with Stage 0 or low-tech process-based restoration, natural channel design, and large wood addition techniques.
- Experience in construction management of stream restoration or other heavy civil water resources projects.
- Experience with pre/post fire watershed restoration projects, such as debris or sediment modeling and implementation of sediment reduction projects.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences.
- Self-motivated and energetic, with excellent time-management and organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously.
- Ability and willingness to travel and work longer hours in variable weather conditions.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Willingness to assist in other tasks as necessary to advance TU’s conservation mission, such as grant writing, reporting, engagement events, advocacy, and volunteer coordination.
- Interest in developing and expanding TU’s engineering and design team, including review of designs by others and mentoring of staff.
- Passion for protecting and restoring coldwater rivers and their watersheds.
- Past experience writing grants or fundraising for large-scale projects and programs a plus.
