Human-Centered AI Intern, Computational Social Science

People Operations

• Partner with all leaders as a trusted advisor to understand business priorities and develop people strategies that drive organizational goals.
• Guide organizational design decisions, including team structures, spans and layers, and headcount planning.
• Coach managers and leaders on team dynamics, communication, employee development, and retention strategies.
• Lead or support the execution of performance management, employee engagement, and succession planning initiatives.
• Identify and assess workforce risks or gaps and develop proactive solutions in collaboration with the wider People organization.
• Assess external trends (e.g., macroeconomic shifts, DEI benchmarks, regulatory changes) and advise on implications for talent strategy.
• Help drive and support change management efforts that ensure smooth transitions and consistent adoption of new programs or structures.
• Partner cross-functionally with other People team members (e.g., People Operations, Compensation, Talent Acquisition) to ensure aligned and scalable solutions.

Senior People Partner

• Examine how collective wellbeing relates to individual-level wellbeing, including issues of aggregation, inequality, and shared context.
• Be the primary driver of the technical plan (e.g., study design, analysis plan) with regular feedback from your mentor and teammates.
• Implement and complete the project using TRI resources.
• Present the project's approach and findings in research meetings to the Harmonious Communities Department, the HCAI Division, and TRI, as well as to partners from Toyota business groups.
• Our goal is that you end the summer with work that informs internal strategy and may be publishable in an academic journal or conference.

Human-Centered AI Intern, Behavioral Science

Robotics

• Design and implement post-training pipelines for VLA models using techniques such as reinforcement learning (RL), reinforcement learning from human or preference feedback (RLHF/RLAIF), in-context learning.
• Develop methods to enhance real-world transferability of policies trained in simulation.
• Explore and implement reset-free and autonomous data collection strategies that enable continual skill improvement without manual resets or supervision.
• Investigate exploration algorithms that balance safety, curiosity, and efficiency for data gathering in both simulation and real-world robotic systems.
• Lead the design of data collection and curation pipelines for exploration and post-training.

Research Scientist, Robotics VLAs Post-Training and Adaptation

• Develop and integrate VLAs or VAMs (Vision-Action models) linking perception to autonomous robot actions involving complex manipulation and/or navigation.
• Invent and deploy innovative solutions combining VLAs with classic optimization-based planners to enhance the robustness of robot behaviors.
• Collect, clean, and visualize a variety of data from robot mobile manipulation tasks.
• Gain a deeper understanding of the failure modes and bottlenecks in state-of-the-art robot foundation models.

Robotics Intern – Mobile Manipulation

Designer

• Build and maintain strong baselines comparing composition-only and structure-aware representations across a set of key property prediction tasks.
• Prototype and evaluate multi-view representation methods that integrate signals from multiple characterizations and properties.
• Develop a reusable evaluation and reporting pipeline to assess generalization, identify failure modes, and quantify uncertainty where appropriate.
• Curate datasets and implement preprocessing workflows that better capture complex materials systems and common sources of noise or ambiguity.
• Contribute high-quality, well-documented code to an internal codebase and help translate results into internal reports, publications, and/or patent disclosures (as appropriate).
