About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Lead and manage the office within the line of business, practice group or satellite office, including serving as backup for Managing Counsel
- Ensure outstanding advocacy and excellent results for Travelers' insured customers and assigned Counsel
- Assist in managing the office to meet financial expectations
- Ensure compliance with Staff Counsel reporting requirements, productivity standards, Code of Conduct, ethics initiatives and office best practices
- Manage staffing, performance, engagement, professional development and compensation
- Promote inclusion, engagement, integrity and teamwork
- Assign cases and initiatives to Staff Counsel based on attorneys' experience, knowledge and skill levels
- Maintain caseload expectations and ensure timely completion of case analyses, litigation plans, evaluations, summaries, legal research and trial reports
- Develop and implement strategies addressing office development opportunities
- Conduct training as needed
- Review files monthly using the Quality Review Form and file review database
- Provide feedback and coaching to attorneys
- Handle an appropriate caseload and achieve results through effective advocacy and trial skills
- Counsel clients and business partners on legal matters and changes in the law
- Support Managing Counsel with management information analysis and utilization management
- Complete required reports, time records and expense reimbursement requests
- Participate in the Staff Counsel Leadership team, committees, Regional Reviews, national projects and management meetings
- Monitor external legal, business and tort trends
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
What you’ll need- Juris Doctorate or equivalent International legal degree; graduate of an accredited law school
- 7 years of experience as a practicing attorney
- Prior project leadership and/or demonstrated informal or actual management experience
- Active license in good standing to practice law in the state(s) where representation is required
- Trial experience
- Superior writing and lawyering skills, including trial skills
- Strong change leadership and change management skills
- Ability to collaborate in a team environment
- Ability to prepare and present clear, concise, logical and well-organized information and advice
- Influential presentation skills and business acumen
- Proven ability to influence at all levels and develop, implement and execute effective strategies
- Proficiency with job-related technologies and ability to promote technology use
- Ability to provide direct feedback and manage underperformers
- Superior business, legal and financial acumen
- Ability to handle hearings, trials, dispositive motion arguments, depositions or other court proceedings
- Ability to transport to hearings, trials, meetings or other proceedings
- Valid driver's license required depending on location
