About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Own the day-to-day operation, health, availability and continuous improvement of Toku's production MySQL databases running on AWS RDS, ensuring reliability across our global SaaS platform
- Take ownership of production incidents, perform troubleshooting and root cause analysis, restore service quickly, and drive permanent improvements that reduce repeat operational issues
- Identify repetitive operational work, evaluate where automation delivers the greatest value, and build scalable workflows and tooling that reduce manual effort, operational risk and engineering overhead
- Improve how database changes, production data fixes and operational requests are managed by introducing safer, more auditable and scalable engineering processes
- Partner closely with software engineers to understand application behaviour, investigate production issues, interpret logs, and improve the interaction between engineering and database operations
- Monitor and optimise database performance through query tuning, indexing strategies, capacity planning and proactive performance analysis
- Manage and continuously improve AWS database services, with a strong focus on Amazon RDS while supporting Toku's ongoing evolution towards Amazon Aurora
- Utilise monitoring platforms such as Datadog and AWS Performance Insights to identify trends, troubleshoot production issues, and improve operational visibility
- Apply secure database practices, improve operational governance, support audit readiness, and help reduce operational risks associated with production database management
- Support and continuously improve high availability and disaster recovery capabilities while leveraging modern AWS managed database services
- Challenge existing ways of working, identify opportunities to eliminate operational toil, and contribute ideas that improve the long-term scalability of the database platform
- Participate in a shared on-call rotation (approximately two weeks per month), responding to production incidents outside normal business hours when required.
Requirements
What you’ll need- 5–8 years of hands-on experience operating production databases within AWS cloud environments
- Strong practical experience with Amazon RDS
- Strong production experience administering and optimising MySQL databases
- Experience managing cloud-managed database services rather than traditional on-premise database infrastructure
- Practical experience automating operational tasks using scripting languages such as Python, SQL or similar
- Experience supporting business-critical production systems, participating in incident response, and operating within an on-call environment
- Strong capability in query optimisation, indexing, performance troubleshooting and root cause analysis
- Good understanding of AWS networking fundamentals, including security groups and the infrastructure concepts required to troubleshoot production database environments
- Experience working closely alongside software engineering teams, with a solid understanding of modern software development lifecycles and the ability to collaborate effectively across engineering and infrastructure
- Demonstrated ability to investigate unfamiliar production issues, learn independently, and develop practical solutions without relying solely on predefined procedures
- A strong sense of ownership, excellent communication skills, and a proactive approach to driving work through to completion while keeping stakeholders informed
- Curiosity and initiative to quickly understand complex production environments, continuously improve existing processes, and embrace new technologies as the platform evolves.
