About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

  • Identify opportunities for exclusive pictures, deeper visual storytelling and longer-term photographic projects
  • Build and maintain relationships with sources, photographers, editors and stakeholders across Kenya and the wider region
  • Travel across Kenya, East Africa and occasionally other parts of the world
  • Edit and manage pictures from photographers across the region

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Based in Nairobi, Kenya
  • Strong technical photography skills
  • Professional digital photography and camera skills
  • Digital image editing and processing
  • Accurate captioning and metadata management
  • Fast and reliable picture filing and transmission from the field
  • Ability to work with professional photography equipment and modern image-management and transmission systems
  • Strong understanding of photographic ethics, accuracy and Reuters' editorial standards
  • Strong track record of covering major stories and producing compelling visual journalism
  • Ability to spot news, work independently in the field, and contribute original visual story ideas
  • Good understanding of Kenya's and wider East Africa's political, economic and social landscape
  • Strong sourcing skills and established regional contacts
  • Ability to work confidently in difficult and fast-moving situations
  • Excellent written and spoken English
  • Ready to travel at short notice
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends and public holidays when required
  • Strong picture-editing skills, attention to detail, sound editorial judgement, and ability to make quick field decisions
