About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Greet and interact with customers and donors in a positive, friendly, and courteous manner
  • Contribute to store sales targets and provide efficient customer service
  • Explain product pricing and featured sale products while protecting donated items
  • Maintain store opening and closing procedures
  • Accurately complete customer transactions, including cash and debit sales
  • Follow policies for cheques, credit cards, refunds, voids, and holds
  • Load, unload, sort, pack, hang, price, and store donated materials
  • Respond to customer enquiries by phone and in person
  • Monitor store activity and maintain store security
  • Assist with window displays, merchandise displays, and store layout plans
  • Retrieve, sort, hang, and price inventory
  • Assist with donation turnover, replenish sales-floor inventory, and remove inventory as directed
  • Handle merchandise safely and organize stock rotation and recycling
  • Assist donors with contributions and place donations in appropriate locations
  • Maintain proper sorting and processing of goods and ensure correct pricing
  • Support staff and customer safety, including snow removal, clearing fire exits, and cleaning spills
  • Maintain an attractive, organized, and safe store; tidy, restock, sweep, dust, and mop
  • Clean the lunchroom, washroom, and common areas on a rotational basis
  • Work in compliance with OH&S legislation and The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies
  • Report directly to the Store Manager

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Completion of some high school course work
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered
  • A few months of experience in processing or distribution of goods or customer service
  • Knowledge of lifting guidelines
  • Cash handling experience is required
  • Experience with cash registers and related processes and procedures, including bank deposits and summary reports
  • Product brand awareness is an asset
  • Experience working in a computerized environment
  • Ability to stand for long periods and frequently twist, bend, crouch, and reach
  • Ability to lift/move 30 pounds
  • Physically capable of lifting/carrying up to 29 lbs frequently without assistance, including bending, twisting, pulling, and pushing products
  • Willingness to understand and support The Salvation Army’s mission and purpose in Canada
  • Compliance with OH&S legislation and The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully
  • Good oral interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as an active, responsible team member
  • Ability to work weekdays and/or Saturdays
