About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Lead systems and software engineering teams delivering stable, automated, easy-to-consume connectivity infrastructure for The Home Depot
Automate systems, processes, and device configurations for the Networking organization
Design, develop, and operate Layer 4 and Layer 7 traffic management platforms across physical, virtual, on-premises, and cloud load balancers and proxies
Own the end-to-end engineer experience for connecting applications, including GUIs, CLIs, APIs, and underlying infrastructure
Apply Platform Engineering and Site Reliability Engineering practices to balance reliability, developer experience, operational toil, and cost efficiency
Drive innovation, growth, change management, and process improvement
Partner with stakeholders, product teams, vendors, and technology leaders
Support planning and funding reviews and communicate technical and business trade-offs
Negotiate staffing of skilled engineering positions on product teams
Contribute to strategic plans and evaluate emerging technologies for enterprise adoption
Collaborate with UX, engineering, and product management to create secure, reliable, scalable software solutions
Write custom code and scripts to automate infrastructure, monitoring services, and test cases
Implement critical tooling and platforms with vendors and partners
Create dashboards, logging, alerting, and proactive incident responses
Contribute to destructive testing, automation, and engineering empowerment tools
Lead review board sessions and drive operational excellence
Provide application support for production software and act as a technical escalation point
Lead, mentor, coach, attract, retain, and develop Software Engineers, managers, and individual contributors
Conduct annual and mid-year reviews and guide team members in strategy, alignment, analysis, and execution
Foster collaboration, career development, modern software practices, and learning activities across product teams

Requirements

What you’ll need

Must be eighteen years of age or older
Must be legally permitted to work in the United States
Mastery of an object-oriented programming language, preferably Java
6–8 years of relevant experience, including leading engineering teams
Proficiency attracting, developing, and mentoring individual contributors and managers
Proficiency leading through other leaders, setting direction, balancing workloads, and driving accountability
Experience driving change management, process improvement, and sustainable team culture
Experience with strategic and financial planning across headcount, capacity, allocations, labor, hardware, cloud, and budget
Experience translating enterprise goals into team objectives such as OKRs
Proficiency managing strategic vendor and managed-service relationships, including SOW and contract negotiations
Proficiency communicating complex technical and business trade-offs from engineers to executives
Strong customer-experience orientation using feedback and data to reduce friction and drive adoption
Working knowledge of application networking, including Layer 4/7 traffic management, load balancers, proxies, and DNS
Working knowledge of infrastructure automation, containerized and cloud platforms such as Kubernetes, GCP, and Azure
Working knowledge of modern CI/CD
Experience applying Platform Engineering/SRE practices, including SLOs, SLIs, error budgets, MTTD, and MTTR
Experience with cloud cost optimization and FinOps
Proficiency supporting a 24x7 retail operation
Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree in a related field, or equivalent qualification through the stated education requirement
