About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Coordinate Hartford state indirect tax processes
  • Review and file sales and use tax and personal property tax returns and associated payments
  • Manage sales and use tax audits, primarily in Connecticut and other states as needed
  • Coordinate with procurement to ensure sales taxes are properly applied to purchases
  • Oversee tax projects, planning initiatives, and automation strategies
  • Review state tax compliance for timely and accurate filings
  • Work with external consultants on refund opportunities
  • Provide oversight of the Coupa purchasing-system tax process
  • Support procurement inquiries and facilitate weekly meetings to address issues and drive progress
  • Coordinate indirect tax process improvement projects
  • Monitor state indirect tax legislation and assist the AVP of State Taxes in assessing impacts
  • Support tax planning initiatives and other special projects
  • Operate with minimal day-to-day supervision and a high degree of autonomy

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 7+ years’ experience in state tax
  • Insurance background preferred
  • Proficient with tax research tools and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent
  • CPA preferred
  • In-depth understanding of state and local tax laws and regulations
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and practices related to state tax
  • Understanding of financial reporting standards and practices
  • Strong communication skills to convey complex tax concepts to non-tax stakeholders
  • Ability to identify and resolve tax-related issues effectively and efficiently
  • Strong time and project management skills
