About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Train, coach, and develop staff to support individual and professional goals
- Lead a team investigating, evaluating, negotiating, and resolving complex environmental, toxic tort, asbestos, sexual molestation, and other long-tail liability claims
- Provide strategic oversight on coverage, liability, damages, allocation, litigation management, and settlement strategies
- Develop and implement innovative claim disposition strategies and pursue timely claim resolutions
- Monitor claim performance, financial results, reserving accuracy, settlement outcomes, and operational metrics
- Evaluate and communicate industry, litigation, scientific, regulatory, and jurisdictional developments
- Partner with Coverage Counsel, Operations, Reinsurance, Underwriting, Actuarial, Product, Risk Control, brokers, agents, outside counsel, consultants, and senior leadership
- Oversee litigation strategy and manage outside counsel, experts, consultants, and vendor partners
- Ensure consistent, high-quality claim handling and exceptional customer service
- Build and maintain a high-performing, diverse, and inclusive team
- Identify improvements to claim handling, operations, and technology, including data analytics and AI-enabled tools
Requirements
What you’ll need- Bachelor's degree preferred; advanced degree or relevant professional designation, including JD, CPCU, AIC, or ARM, are a plus
- Minimum of 7 years of casualty claim experience within a property and casualty claim organization
- Significant experience handling environmental, toxic tort, asbestos, sexual molestation, latent bodily injury, or other complex long-tail liability claims
- Strong understanding of complex insurance coverage issues, occurrence-based liability coverage, allocation, trigger theories, long-tail exposures, bankruptcy trust considerations, and multi-year claim analysis
- Ability to evaluate liability, coverage, damages, and litigation risks and develop claim resolution strategies
- Superior negotiation, communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
- Prior management experience, including direct leadership, employee development, mentoring, or project leadership
- Ability to influence and collaborate across business functions and with senior stakeholders
- Ability to coach technical claim professionals and provide strategic recommendations to management
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, and decision-making skills
- Experience managing high-severity litigation and coordinating with outside counsel, experts, consultants, and stakeholders
- Ability to prioritize competing demands and manage workload in a fast-paced environment
- Commitment to customer service, employee engagement, diversity and inclusion, and continuous improvement
- Strong technical acumen and proficiency with Microsoft Office and AI-enabled technologies, including Microsoft Copilot
- Ability to quickly learn and leverage new systems and tools
