About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Lead complex and sensitive investigations (e.g., defalcations, fraud, misuse of Church resources) from intake through resolution
  • Design and execute investigative strategies, adapting approach as new information emerges
  • Conduct and guide sensitive interviews with professionalism and sound judgment
  • Evaluate evidence, financial activity, and conflicting information to reach well-supported conclusions
  • Prepare clear, concise, and defensible investigative reports and executive summaries
  • Manage a portfolio of investigative matters across regions, ensuring quality and timeliness
  • Review investigative scope, approach, documentation, and conclusions for accuracy and consistency
  • Provide guidance to investigators on investigative procedures, risk areas, and classification decisions
  • Coordinate with senior leadership on prioritization, escalation, and resolution of cases
  • Approve or contribute to final case conclusion recommendations and reporting, as appropriate
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for Area leadership, controllers, human resources, and in-house legal counsel
  • Build trusted relationships while maintaining independence and objectivity
  • Ensure investigations are conducted with appropriate sensitivity and alignment with Church policies
  • Provide training and mentoring to investigators and audit team members
  • Support onboarding and development of investigators
  • Promote consistency in applying investigative standards, methodologies, and documentation
  • Identify emerging risks and patterns across investigations
  • Contribute to development of investigative processes, tools, and methodologies
  • Support leadership briefings and strategic initiatives within the investigative team

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • 10+ years of experience in investigations, auditing, forensic accounting, or related field
  • Requires a Bachelor's Degree in accounting, finance, or other applicable education. Master's Degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience leading complex or sensitive investigations
  • Strong analytical and investigative judgment
  • Experience managing people, projects, and investigative portfolios preferred
  • Professional certification strongly encouraged (CFE preferred; CPA/CIA beneficial)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to handle highly sensitive and confidential matters with discretion
