About the role
- Serve as the Senior Network Engineer providing technical labor support for high-performance network infrastructure
- Designing, implementing, maintaining, and optimizing networks; troubleshooting complex issues; enforcing security; and coordinating with stakeholders to ensure reliability, scalability, and compliance with all applicable policies
- Work in close coordination with program administrators, project managers, and operations staff, responding to emails, chats, and calls within 2 business hours
- Providing weekly activity reports and participating actively in all meetings
- Develop and enforce network security policies, procedures, and best practices; perform regular security audits and vulnerability assessments
- Manage and troubleshoot complex network issues across multiple sites and architectures; provide on-site services and support as needed at Beltsville, MD
- Serve as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for operation and maintenance of the Lantronix Out-of-Band Management environment
- Evaluate and implement emerging networking technologies and innovations to improve performance; develop and maintain network documentation, diagrams, and configurations
- Guide and coordinate work of external Network Operations Center (NOC); collaborate daily with NOC and site IT Points of Contact for issue resolution
- Provide support to help desk for network-related escalations
- Plan, implement, and manage network connections, SD-WAN, IP routing, VLANs, QoS policies, multicast configurations, access control lists, encryption, and automation scripting (e.g., Python, Ansible)
- Ensure compliance with federal regulations, cybersecurity requirements, IPv6 standards, and Section 508 accessibility; produce required reports and deliverables
- Deliverables include weekly NOC coordination reports, network connectivity/performance issue status updates, network security audit reports with analysis and remediation plans, and network performance reports with optimization recommendations
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Network Engineering, or related field (Master’s or specialized HPC networking training preferred)
- Minimum 8 years of experience designing/implementing complex network architectures; configuring/managing routers, switches, firewalls; supporting data-intensive/scientific applications
- Extensive experience with high-performance computing (HPC) environments/large-scale enterprise networks; SD-WAN, IP routing (Internet2/commodity Internet); VLANs, QoS, multicast, ACLs, encryption
- Proven skills in network troubleshooting, security operations, performance monitoring, automation (Python, Ansible), and vulnerability assessments
- Deep knowledge of HPC networking community, RE/Internet2 practices, and interdisciplinary collaboration (computing/storage managers, developers, local operators, ISPs)
- Strong problem-solving, verbal/written communication, project planning/execution, and multidisciplinary teamwork skills
- Ability to work independently under time constraints; manage multiple projects; perform on-site support as needed
