About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Collect blood specimens and receive, handle, and process specimens for laboratory testing
- Interact compassionately and effectively with patients of diverse ages, backgrounds, values, beliefs, and behaviors
- Receive, sort, and accession specimens into appropriate pre-analytic and analytic workflows
- Complete computerized patient registration and/or test order entry tasks
- Perform specimen collection, receiving, processing, report distribution, and specimen storage/retrieval
- Document work and maintain a clean, stocked, and safe work area
- Monitor pending work and escalate priority work
- Operate basic pre-analytic laboratory equipment
- Follow local, state, and federal regulations, codes, policies, and procedures to ensure privacy and patient safety
Requirements
What you’ll need- High school diploma, General Education Diploma (GED), or equivalent education/experience
- Equivalent experience accepted in lieu of the required degree or diploma
- California Licensed Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) I or II
- 1 year of recent relevant experience
- Knowledge of laboratory test ordering and blood specimen collection
- Knowledge of handling and processing biological specimens
- Ability to accurately, precisely, and reliably perform duties and assigned tasks
- Ability to organize and prioritize tasks within expected timeframes
- Ability to interact compassionately and effectively with diverse patients
- Ability to manage workflow fluctuations, unexpected equipment or information-system failures, hand-offs, STAT test orders, specimen integrity issues, and pending logs
- Ability to follow standard practices, processes, and procedures
- Knowledge of applicable privacy and patient-safety regulations, codes, policies, and procedures
- Critical-thinking, decision-making, problem-solving, and escalation skills
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively and communicate current, factual, and relevant work information
- Ability to work a full-time day schedule, Monday–Friday, with rotating weekends
- California licensure as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) I or II
