About the role
Key responsibilities & impact- Install signs and perform maintenance activities involving installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic control devices along the state road network for Division 5
- Install signage associated with road closures and detours
- Maintain inventory of signs and truck materials, including posts, nuts, bolts, and specialized hardware for historical markers and decorative signposts
- Perform snow and ice control operations during storm conditions
- Operate CDL-required equipment and trucks with manual and automatic transmissions
- Work in extreme temperature conditions and around high volumes of traffic
- Walk and stand for long periods on uneven and sloping terrain
- Perform heavy lifting when required
- Work evening and weekend shifts when required
Requirements
What you’ll need- High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Current Commercial Driver’s License at hire, or ability to obtain a North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License through on-the-job training and all required Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations requirements within 360 days of hire
- Must be able to legally operate CDL-required equipment and trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at hire or within 360 days of hire
- Visual acuity
- Safety toe footwear
- Ability to communicate effectively with people
- Ability to work in extreme temperature conditions
- Ability to walk and stand for long periods on uneven and sloping terrain and around high volumes of traffic
- Ability to perform heavy lifting when required
- No more than two moving-violation convictions within the past three years
- No alcohol- or drug-related traffic offense convictions within the past five years
- Valid, current North Carolina driver’s license appropriate for the vehicle, or valid appropriate license from an adjacent state for employees permanently residing there
- Driving records required for applicants with out-of-state licenses currently or within the past ten years
- Pre-employment drug testing
- Signed release form ALCDRG-01 and background statement ALCDRG-06
- Successful completion of NCDOT post-offer employment evaluation
- Management prefers experience installing traffic control such as detours and lane closures
- Management prefers experience with at least two listed maintenance equipment types
- Management prefers manual labor experience
- Management prefers customer service experience
- Management prefers record-keeping experience, including tracking employee/equipment time and material quantities
