About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Place offenders into appropriate supervision levels through investigative and assessment processes
  • Respond to offender behavior and non-compliance
  • Make referrals regarding needed treatment

  • Carry an officer safety package including a firearm, pepper spray, and protective vest
  • Intervene in crises and conduct arrests
  • Evaluate offender needs for successful completion of probation or post-release and parole
  • Interact with court personnel, victims, community agencies, and law enforcement personnel
  • Maintain a professional demeanor with potentially volatile and assaultive offenders
  • Defend oneself and others when necessary
  • Maintain positive professional relationships with offenders, community leaders, law enforcement, and court officials
  • Make home visits, sometimes in the middle of the night when on-call
  • Search offenders' homes
  • Make decisions about punishment for non-compliant offenders
  • Complete eight consecutive weeks of Basic training, including firearms, OC pepper spray, defensive techniques, arrest, search and seizure, drug testing, ethics, laws, procedures, and policies

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission
  • Must complete Criminal Justice Standards Training and all General Certification requirements within one year or as required
  • Must pass a firearms test, self-defense class, and Basic PPO Certification Exam after hire
  • Must pass background checks and drug screening
  • Must be physically able to perform essential job functions and pass a physical exam
  • Must pass a psychological screening
  • Must be a US or naturalized citizen
  • Must obtain a valid NC driver's license within 90 days after hire
  • Must live within 30 miles of the assigned county within 90 days after hire
  • Must remain in the assigned county for two years and reside within North Carolina
  • Must be able to carry and use a gun and OC pepper spray
  • Must be able to work independently, make arrests, search offenders' homes, make nighttime home visits, and handle potentially volatile offenders
  • Must be able to learn various software and maintain electronic records and databases
  • Must complete eight consecutive weeks of Basic training and remain on campus overnight
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills
  • Experience using computer software to maintain electronic records and databases
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and establish effective working relationships
