About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Oversee regionally based Environmental Senior Specialists serving as primary contacts for the NC DEQ Solid Waste Section and its programs
Serve as first-line supervisor for Solid Waste Section representatives in Western District North Carolina
Ensure effective implementation of the Solid Waste Management Act and related requirements to protect public health and the environment
Represent the Solid Waste Section to local government and industrial decision-makers
Train personnel and respond to requests involving complex waste management processes
Engage with local governments, consultants, attorneys, media, state and federal agencies, and industrial sectors on regulatory and technical solid waste issues
Present to local boards, councils, citizens groups, and professional organizations
Serve as the primary state-to-local-government contact and resource on state issues
Assist with planning and implementing disaster-response efforts for generated debris in Western North Carolina
Coordinate with the training coordinator to implement internal and external training programs
Coordinate and manage remediation projects, closure evaluations, and sensitive site investigations
Travel extensively within western North Carolina

Requirements

What you’ll need

Bachelor's degree in agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental, or natural resource sciences, or a closely related curriculum, from an appropriately accredited institution; or equivalent combination of education and experience
Three years of progressive experience in environmental work
Valid driver's license required
Ability to oversee and supervise regional environmental staff
Knowledge of complex waste management processes and regulatory frameworks
Ability to address technical solid waste issues
Ability to exercise diplomacy and critical judgment
Ability to coordinate major remediation projects, closure evaluations, and sensitive site investigations
Extensive travel within western North Carolina required
