About the role

Key responsibilities & impact

Maintain safety, custody, and supervision of offenders
Conduct searches of offenders, visitors, cells, and facility areas for contraband
Monitor offender activity in person and through surveillance systems
Maintain offender counts, housing assignments, and required records
Escort offenders within and outside the facility
Supervise offender work assignments
Identify and report behavioral, medical, or safety concerns
Complete six weeks of Basic Correctional Officer Training (BCOT), including an overnight weekday stay at the training facility
Work assigned rotating, fixed, or split shifts, including days, nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as required

Requirements

What you’ll need

Must meet North Carolina Criminal Justice Standards requirements and be eligible for certification by the NC Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission
Must pass a criminal background check
Must produce a negative drug screening result
Must successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
Must possess an active, valid driver's license
Correctional Officer I: High School or GED diploma, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Correctional Officer II: High School or GED diploma and one year of Correctional Officer experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Correctional Officer III: High School or GED diploma and two years of Correctional Officer experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Trainee appointment: High School or GED diploma, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Ability to work any shift, including rotating, fixed, or split shifts
Ability to work days, nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as required
Must complete six weeks of Basic Correctional Officer Training (BCOT)
Education must be from an appropriately accredited institution
Applicants must complete the State application in full, including education history, work experience, and applicable certificates and licenses
Applicants seeking Veteran's Preference must attach the DD-214 Member-4 Form
Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must provide the specified NGB or discharge documentation where applicable
