About the role

Key responsibilities & impact
  • Record court trials, hearings, and conferences by stenotype or voice-writing methods
  • Transcribe proceedings into accurate transcripts for appeals or court orders
  • Read participants’ statements aloud when required
  • Mark supplemental materials for inclusion in transcripts
  • Ensure evidence is properly introduced and marked as exhibits
  • Take dictation of orders and findings of fact and create documents for judges’ signatures
  • Maintain files, notes, tapes, and indexed records
  • Proofread, edit, and certify transcripts
  • Respond to inquiries from court personnel, attorneys, citizens, and prisoners
  • Complete activity reports and travel reimbursement forms when applicable
  • Submit timely reports to the Administrative Office of the Courts and/or court reporting manager
  • Cover assignments in judicial districts as court coverage dictates

Requirements

What you’ll need
  • NCRA Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) certification or NVRA Certified Verbatim Reporter (CVR) certification; or
  • Completion of an NCRA- or NVRA-approved court reporting program and 10 years of court reporting experience; or
  • License as an official court reporter in another state and 5 years of court reporting experience
  • Knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, spelling, court rules, legal terminology, transcript format, and style
  • Ability to transcribe notes rapidly and accurately
  • Skill using court reporting hardware
  • Ability to type high volumes of material over sustained periods within deadlines
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to represent the court consistently with its decorum
